Hello!

I have one 6.5 and 2x 3.5 year old daughters and have been a bit slack and they only ride 3 wheeler bikes. Was wondering when is the best time to start/learn how to ride a bicycle without training wheels?

  • I’m 50 and I still can ‘t ride a bike. I don’t know, maybe when they’re confident?

  • We took the training wheels off at five years of age.

  • My kids had 2 wheeler bikes at approximately 3-4 years of age. I took the training wheels off when they became quite proficient at riding them

  • Really depends on the kid and how keen they are. You know your childs ability the best. Its different for everyone.

  • Maybe try a balance bike – we found our kids were great balancing and then just had to learn to peddle.

  • well depends. if they are confident on their little bikes, move to proper bikes with training wheels. take them off when your child is confident and ready to try :)

  • I am guessing when they are ready and every child is different :)

  • We took our kids training wheels off when it looked like they had the balance under control. You watch them and see how much time the trainers spend on the ground and go from there

  • My daughter has only just managed to get to 2 wheels and she is 8. Yes, she was slower than other kids, but that was just her, she wanted to have training wheels on – she was so nervous without them that she refused to try. It really depends on how good they are with steering, cornering, braking and all the other elements that need to be mastered too.

  • It will depend on your kids. It might not be a case of being slack, but a case of balance.
It took me a long time to learn how to balance on a two wheeler bike, I thing I was about 10 when I actually managed it.
I got a 2 wheel scooter when I was 9, which helped my balance immensely, then one day I could just go!
