Hello!

Is there a best time of year to have a baby in terms of the Australian education system? While there is often flexibility in starting school and skipping or repeating years do you think there is a ‘best’ time so that the child does well among peers in school?

  • I wouldn’t worry too much about the birthday in relation to the school year. Kids can start when they’re 4yrs old, but can also start when they’re 5

  • I don’t feel there’s a preferable time of year to have a baby. But then I also didn’t have any issues with enrolling my kids at school due to their birth date

  • It is better not to be too close to the end of the year or close to “cut off date”. Not all children are emotionally mature enough to cope with school and interact with other children even if they have attended daycare or pre-school (called kindy in some states). Also they may not have learnt enough things that other children have prior to starting school. They also suddenly have to adapt to a new routine. They have to learn to be quiet, not get up and wander around or walk out of the classroom when they feel like it. It is a huge adjustment and they cope better when they are a little older. Suddenly their teacher is not a stranger (we teach our kids not to talk to strangers) They can’t eat just when they feel like it. There is a lot of things to think about for the future when deciding the best time to have a baby.

  • August is good!

  • I think your bes tto research though you want them to be at there oldest when the term starts so they are slightly more developed than there peers

  • Lol. If only it was that easy!

  • It depends on the state as to when school cut off is I think. For SA it’s April 30, so I think having a baby after this date would be beneficial so they are one of the eldest in their class as they can’t start school until the following year.
