What’s the best way to defrost meat? – I’m always worried about defrosting meat out of the fridge. How long is it OK to keep it out to defrost? Or is there a better way to defrost meat?

  • Best thing to do is to defrost the meat in the fridge by pulling it out of the freezer and letting it “warm up” in the fridge overnight. That is the most hygienic way of doing it – I do this with fish and find that sometimes, I don’t need to do it overnight – putting the fish in the fridge in the morning to cook that night is enough.

    With beef, pork and chicken, if I forget to put it in the fridge overnight, I pull it out of the freezer first thing in the morning and leave it on the kitchen bench or in the sink during the day to defrost. I haven’t had any problems with food poisoning doing it this way, but it does depend on how warm the day is, and how warm the kitchen gets during the day, and how much frozen food I’m defrosting.

  • The best way is to pull it out of the freezer well in advance and defrost it in the fridge.
    Be especially careful with fish and chicken

  • I get the meat straight out of the freezer just before preparing the rest of the meal by soaking it in hot water I never defrost meat out side the fridge or freezer.
