  • We have done both at a time we have moved house. Out of the cot and into the bed. It has worked for us both kids were around 18months-2 years

  • Totally depends on your child. Just look to motivations to move to the cot that is safety / child start climbing or child is ready for the move and can deal with a big bed and make your decision based on that.

  • I would wait till at least two years of age or even older.

  • We transitioned when our son was just past 2 anf he kept escaping from his cot. We added a bed rail because he fell out a couple of times. The challenge was keeping him in his room because it was the best game ever getting out of bed. We ended up putting a safety gate over his bedroom door to keep him in. After that he knew it was sleep time when the gate got shut. Its not easy. Just gotta keep at it and keep putting him back to bed.

  • Great! It was interesting reading the answers to this!

  • WHEN IT FEELS RIGHT – YOU WILL KNOW WHEN IT IS TIME. DON’T KNOW TOO MANY ADULTS THAT SLEEP IN A COT

  • Don’t! If he sleeps great and doesn’t climb out of his cot etc! Admire the time you have and keep it like that!

  • going from a cot to bed usually means no more day naps as they can get out

  • We did it for my daughter just after she turned 2

  • Did you manage to get him into a single bed?

  • I would assume he is still having daytime naps, so it might be helpful to ease him into it by just doing daytime naps in the bed.

  • Lots of great suggestions here from other people, hopefully they were of some help to you

  • A-Edwards some kids don’t handle the transition from a cot to a big bed well. It can be a big change for a little person! To original poster, I hope it went well when you moved him to his big boy bed.

  • But y would his sleep b any different?

  • If you can have both set up for a short time and he still has daytime naps, putting him in the big bed for a week of naps and still in the cot at night will allow him to get used to it, and you will be able to quickly tell if he will have any issues with it. You may be lucky and find he wants to spend all of his sleep time in the ‘big boy bed’.
