Hello!

“My son needs a mouthguard for rugby, are the ones from the chemist OK or should I go to a dentist to get one properly fitted?”

  • I would first try the ones from the chemist, they may not be comfortable for all but they may for your son..you never know till you try. When your experience isn’t positive with that you can always have dome properly fitted.

  • A dental technician would be my first choice.

  • First year we got them from the chemist and they were fine. But our dentist had a deal this year that if you have health insurance they covered the gap so we got them for free. Was great for my 6 yo but my 8yo had new teeth growing in up top so it didn’t fit after that.

  • either will be good, the ones from the dentist might be more comfortable

  • Also; check on whether you can claim any costs back if you go with a fitted mouth guard.

  • Chemist ones are cheaper but not fitted; so may be uncomfortable.
Dentist ones are fitted and should offer comfort and protection.

  • I would get it properly fitted as then the dentist will also have a mould of the teeth should anything happen. The ones from the chemist aren’t really very good

  • I’d get one properly fitted. Teeth are expensive to fix so it could work out to be a very good investment.

  • I would get one properly fitted, I think sports clinics actually do them also and you don’t need the expense of a dentist

  • Probably go to the dentist to get a proper fitting one if hes serious about sport. How old is he? The older he is the more rough physical contact there’d be I guess

  • Most sports shops sell them.

  • Go to the dentist for better protection of the teeth

  • The chemist ones are very uncomfortable

  • I would go to the dentist…teeth are expensive- better to be safe than sorry!
