Hello!

My great niece was so excited when she learnt that she was expecting, until friends and even total strangers on realising she was pregnant started rolling out horror stories of hiccups in birth and pregnancy. Why is it that everyone seems to tell the worst without feeling the joy and sharing the happiness any new baby brings?

  • I wouldn’t tell anyone of my experience unless they asked. If they did, I would be honest and tell of both the highs and lows.

  • First of all I think it can be a form of processing that what they experienced themselves.
Second I think that people love to exaggerate and draw attention to themselves.
It’s not a wise response on someone who’s first expecting, actually a rather selfish response because the person who does the story makes it all about herself.

  • Exactly – scary enough without being told all the negatives. Everyones experience is different and some have beautiful stories – share these instead!

  • I have no idea but it’s so frustrating

  • Because some are miserable and like to make it seem like they had it the hardest.. parenthood seems to become a competition of who had it worse!

  • Oh I hate that too! I feel it’s important to be honest but only as much as the mum to be wants to know – and certainly not horror stories.

  • It’s like talking about still-borns at a baby shower…. I know there is always a possibility these things can happen but it’s never good to hear when your weeks off of giving birth.
My mum told me her cousin & his partner lost their 5mth old bub to SIDS when I was about 8 months pregnant. Why would you do that??? No wonder I had trouble sleeping as a new mum.

  • I have no idea, i always pull people up when i hear them trying to scare my friends family etc about it. I had great pregnancys and labours and i always share how amazing it was for me and that some people are just unfortunate (or wingers)

  • It’s the drama! I think a lot of people feel competitive about who had the worst time!
