Hello!

Why does my 7 month old puppy only destroy my book/shoes/anything if left alone at home for an hour or two?

  • Because it’s lonely and bored. It’s only young, it takes time to get used to being alone. Time will hopefully improve things off you

  • She obviously has a connection with you. Being a puppy, I’m sure it’s a phase she’s going through

  • yeah, tipping not bored or lonely, just disgruntled at being left at home we are home with her all the time and rarely go out, so guess she is learning to cope with that. I now leave my dressing gown on the bed and we use the same dialogue when leaving the house, and it is working….

  • Puppy daycare is your friend. They can help keep your puppy not be bored, socialise them and some of them even offer training too.

  • Your puppy would be teething at that age have you supplied it with plenty of toys to chew on?
I use for my own dogs Kong toys they are great as you can stuff the centre with treats/food/peanut butter and it keeps them entertained for hours. Plus rotate any toys you have for them so they don’t get board of them much like how a child would. Other options for chewing are rawhides brought from vet clinics not cheap shops or supermarkets. Don’t give bones EVER.

  • I agree with the boredom, we were pretty lucky as my partner works shifts so was there with her a lot when she was still a puppy. She never really destroyed anything though even though Labradors like to chew. She tends to play with her toys more. Now that she’s 2.5 yrs old she spends most of her time sleeping on the bed. She still does love to get her toy box and throw everything out, and scatter toys round the house which is pretty harmless. Good luck, get some puppy training and some toys of its own to destroy rather than your own belongings. Keep things out of harms way too.

  • Sounds he’s lonely and bored. Maybe lock it in the backyard ?

  • Puppy school/training is a good idea and they will give you good tips and ideas for your puppy.

  • That is what puppies do unfortunately, they have so much energy and get bored easily. Especially when you are at work, that is when puppies get up to mischief. The best way is to walk your puppy in the morning and try and tire them out. And try to keep your things up high, my puppy loved shoes and my daughters soft toys!

  • Usually it’s because they are bored or lonely

  • thanks all, pup has loads of toys, and is walked for an hour in the morning and again at night. being a poodle she isn’t food oriented. I will keep persevering and hope it is just a stage!

  • I agree with mum4107.
Puppy is bored and is going for things that have your strong scent on them

  • He smells his master on it… Lock him in the back yard if its only for a short time.. If he does it as soon as you find it show him it.. and put him outside… y doing that you are showing him who is boss you if youl et it keep happenng he will think he rules your house not .you….

  • Puppies need plenty of exercise and activities, toys etc to keep them occupied.
They get lonely and bored when left alone with nothing different to amuse themselves with. Puppies get new teeth the same as human babies do. They look for something to chew on, and probably destroy it at the same time. Rotate their toys and don’t give them all of them at the same time. That way a different one re- introduced captures their attention for awhile.

  • Because he is bored and lonely and your things smell like you
