Term 1 of school is almost over … and as mums most of us have lots of questions about what comes next!

It doesn’t matter whether your child has just started at school, is new to secondary or is doing the HSC, we’ve always got questions …

  • Does my child need extra help?
  • Are they being bullied?
  • Are days off OK?
  • What should I be doing as the mum?
  • How often should I talk to the teacher?

These are all great questions but often we don’t know who to turn to for advice …  until now!

The MoM Answers Live Discussion is designed to get you straight in touch with an expert so that you can discuss your questions and get some answers on the spot!

We’re hoping that even if you don’t ask a question, you’ll still find the discussion really useful.

How will the LIVE DISCUSSION work?

On Tuesday 9th April at 8.00pm, Sonja will join the Mouths of Mums team on the Mouths of Mums facebook page and will be ready to answer as many questions as she possibly can in an hour.  All you need to do is post a question in the SCHOOL! MoM Answers Live Discussion post on the night and we’ll get to it.

Prior to the live discussion, we will be creating a series of videos where Sonja answers the most popular questions from the Mouths of Mums members.  If you have a question you would like included in the video series, POST YOUR QUESTION AS A COMMENT ON THIS PAGE AS SOON AS POSSIBLE or email your question to answers@mouthsofmums.com.au. We will look at all these questions and interview Sonja about the questions that are most frequently asked.

  1. Post a question below or email your question to answers@mouthsofmums.com.au
  2. Mark the date in your diary, on your calendar and on the fridge!

  5. Recommend this page to as many other mums as you can – the more mums we get involved, the better the discussion will be!
  6. At 7.55pm on April 9, grab your glass of wine, Baileys, your tea or coffee, go to the actual Mouths of Mums facebook page and get ready to ask Sonja about any questions you have concerning school.
  7. Please be patient once you’ve added your question – there may be lots at once and Sonja will be typing like mad!  While you wait for your answer, you’ll be able to watch some of the video answers we produce and follow some of the other questions.

  • My daughter’s birthday is in August, so she just misses the cut off to start kindy next year, but another 2 years in daycare is going to drive her bananas i believe as she is quite smart, so I was just wondering, is there anything that i can do to have her start school next year?

  • What a great idea. But live at 8pm in which state?

  • The two kindys in our town are full for next year. My son is supposed to start in January. Will he still be accepted even though its full? What do they mean by full?

  • sorry half my earlier post is missing my son started prep this year. he was looking forward to school and went with no problems. Then aparantly some big kids told him that they would catch him and hold his head under water in the toilet and he would be sick. now my son hates washing of a night or morning he screams in the shower and we can barely get him to sit long enough in the bath to clean him. its not a dilike of water as he loves his swimming lessons. how do i get my boy over what the big kids told him.

  • Because of her very thin long feet, from her childood till now we have troble finding her the right shoe size, She is not allowed to attend class for a week now. A friend offered to find a pair in NZ but it’s going to take weeks.

  • I have a six year old son with a high IQ in year 1 and who can read like an 8/9 yeaar old. However even though he’s happy to demonstrate this at school in other areas even though he is equally capable he is slow to start and works very slowly. I’m not sure if he is bored or if he just a perfectionist. He wants to write long complicated sentences and stories, thinks about planning them out before he starts writing and is then upset that he is not given enough time to finish his writing to his satisfaction. Is there a way I can speed him up and get him to focus on completing the task on time?

I hope you can help me, as I don’t understand why he does this at school and not at home. At home I set a homework task with a time limit and he does it quicker than the allocated time.

  • Where could I get info to encourage my children to excel with their studies e.g online ? I would like to know if there’s any support group for selective mutism in Melb. :) Thanks!

  • My junlor has just completed has ACschool DISEASE YEAR WTH IS DA OTHR STP THAT HE’LL B TAKING?.?..

  • My daughter’s starting kindergarten in 3 wks time .What shall i do 2 help her out?

  • My son will be 3 years old in June. He is a bright little boy, speaks well, clever, quick in answering questions in his class in his day care and has a good interaction with his friends and educators as well.

Should he start school at 4.5 years old or whether best start at 5.5 years old?

We heard that school is different to years ago where now children are using technology like iPad as part of learning. Is this correct?
We just recently bought an iPad and my son is using it but we limit him just plays
on Saturday and Sunday for some educational apps and watching youTube for kids nursery rhymes and videos. Of course he still will do other stuffs like drawing or painting activity on paper and play other toys as well. So not on iPad for whole day.
Is this best for him to learn using technology like iPad?

Thank you in advance for your advice.

  • My eldest has just started school this year. She keeps coming home saying she is bored at school as she’s not learning anything new. Is this something I should talk to the teacher about and if so how do I word it so as not to upset the teacher?

  • I have a son who’s doin prep 1 and for some reason he has not being writing and yet he knows how to. I was told by my mum that in the first weeks he brought his books home with work done for the day but now he doesnt seem to be having written for the last week and this week. I’m away doin a short course on Early childhood learning and he resides with my mum. I’m just wondering if has dropped that morale or he is just missing me and showing no interest in school work or he has found some kiddie friends that have taken his school interest away.

  • I have a 3 year old son who is very bright, speaks really well for his age and loves being around people. He is born in May and I was wondering what you would recommend regarding the right age to start school. Would it be better for him to be 4 going on 5 and one of the youngest in his year level, or should I wait a year until he is 5 going on 6 so he can be one of the oldest kids in his year level?

  • my son hates washing of a night. he screams in the shower and will barely sit long enough in the bath to get himself clean. Its not a dislike of water as he loves having swimming lessons.

  • I would like to know how can I help my son in reading independently. He is in prep but does not show much interest in reading. How can I create his interest in reading?
