‘I thought his bunk bed was safe. His doctor said he has a significant, horrible concussion, one of the worst she has ever seen in a child.’

Sarah Crothers shares with Love What Matters her family’s terrifying experience after their son fell from his bunk bed.

“We learned a hard yet valuable lesson last night about the dangers of bunk beds even with a safety rail on the top bunk. Last night at bedtime, Brady, who sleeps on the top bunk, was leaning over the safety rail to talk to Eli on the bottom bunk. The safety rail gave way and Brady fell headfirst to the floor, landing on the hard wooden safety rail. He put his arm up as he fell to protect his head, and his wrist bore the brunt of his landing.

Sarah explained, “He was very shaken up and his wrist hurt a lot, but he calmed down and was able to move it so we thought all was fine and put him to bed. At 3:30am, he woke up and started vomiting. He said he had a bad headache and was lightheaded/dizzy. I honestly at first just thought he had a stomach bug, but as the night went on and he continued to vomit and have a headache, I began to worry he might possibly have a concussion.”

Sarah said she called his pediatrician as soon as they opened and they told me to bring him to the ER.

Sarah added, “He had several tests done and his doctor just came in to tell us that he has ‘a significant, horrible concussion, one of the worst she has ever seen in a child.’

“Based on his symptoms and some other concerning things she saw while examining him, she was very worried he might have a skull fracture or brain bleed, but praise the Lord, his tests don’t show either of those things. He will have to be very careful in the coming days as he recovers.

“Although I realize what happened was an accident, I feel horrible that I thought his bunk bed was safe because it has a safety rail. Please reconsider the use of bunk beds/loft beds for your kids, even with a safety rail.”

  • For larger families bunk beds are often the only solution. Lets face it they have been around for many years and yes some kids have fallen but some kids have fallen out of or from single beds also. Kids need to be taught not to be silly and fool about on these things and I know in this case he was leaning over the rail and it gave way but the rails are not supposed to take weight like that. They are there so you dont roll out in the middle of the night.

  • I’m sorry for this young boy. Have always been wary of bunk beds even though they do save space.

  • Poor boy, he’s very lucky that it wasn’t worse !
We have 3 bunk beds in our house, never had this issue.

  • Poor kid but the safety rail giving way does seem more like an issue with that particular bunk rather than the beds in general.

  • I’m surprised she waited so long to seek medical care.

  • or make sure the bed is constructed properly, realise there is an age limit and teach your kid not to hang over the side and just maybe if your kid hits their head really hard on the wooden floor and really hurts their wrist take them straight to hospital!

  • This is not a good reason to “reconsider bunk beds”. It’s scary that the safety rail gave way and that sounds like a manufacturing issue to me, specific to the brand that has made it. I hope she’s spoken to the manufacturer and retailer of the bed to make them aware of the issue with the rail.
I had a really sturdy wooden bunk as a child, my father tested it before allowing any of his kids to sleep on it. Never had any issue with it falling apart or breaking, it was solid until the day we replaced it with bigger beds as teens. Always check reviews for any product you buy, ensure its put together as instructed and TEST it before allowing your kids anywhere near it – that should be the recommedation here.

  • I only got the chance to sleep in a bunk bed until I was older and even then I was on the bottom. For my kids, the idea freaks me out. My eldest loves climbing but I can imagine the worst. Not to mention the one on top would be too close to the ceiling fan for my liking

  • We had bunk beds as kids. They were good fun but I wouldn’t put my children in them. I will never understand parents who wait that long to seek treatment though. Her kid hit his head hard and woke up vomiting and with a headache….seems like the kind of thing you would normally call sooner.
