Her mother-in-law served her a super tiny portion after telling her she is overweight…

Sharing her story to popular forum Mumsnet, one mum has told of how insulted she was when her mother-in-law served her a tiny roast dinner while her husband and father-in-law were served generous portions. After requesting a second helping and being told there was no more food left, the mum says she felt like her mother-in-law was dropping a not so subtle hint about her weight.

Out Of Character

The mum said that she usually had an amicable relationship with her mother-in-law, but that the incident had created tension between them. “Our relationship isn’t that bad, however, I’m fat and she really really can’t cope with the idea that I’m not crash dieting. She is permanently on a diet.” The mum said the meal she was served consisted of “a single roastie, a slice of breast meat and two tablespoons of veg” which was significantly less than her husband and father-in-law. Dissatisfied with her dinner, the mum and her husband decided to pick up fish and chips later that evening on their return from the local pub. It was then that things got nasty…

A Step Too Far

The mum claims that when her mother-in-law realised that she had picked up fish and chips, things got personal. “We got fish and chips on the way home and ate them sitting in the garden while she glared through the kitchen window,” she said. “She then made some comment about me being a ‘pig’ once we were inside. I replied that if she was a decent host who served adequate food to both sexes then we wouldn’t still be hungry.” The mum said she had absolutely no intention of making amends with her mother-in-law following the comments, and was encouraged by fellow forum users to wait until she received an apology. “She called you a pig?” wrote one shocked commenter. “It would be a cold day in hell before I’d call her!”

We have to say we agree! Even though the mum admits she is overweight, it’s up to her if and when she wants to make a change – this mother-in-law definitely went a step too far.

  • How rude.
You could just ignore and stay away.
Or you could stoop to her level and for Birthdays and Christmas she always gets things like suppoort stockings, grey hair cover up, Vein away for spider veins, etc

Actually this is where your husband should have stepped in and told his mother that he will not stand for her speaking to you in that manner and until she apologised you would no longer be visiting.

  • Totally not her (or anyone’s place to say). But when I was pregnant my mum told me I had cellulite and my best friend asked me when my stomach was going to go back to being flat.
So sorry to everyone that my body didn’t bounce back as fast as other people’s!!!!!!!

  • That’s terrible I seriously cannot believe that a mother in law can behave and say hurtful things like that

  • That’s such a horrible thing to be called. I wouldn’t be making a amends with her any time soon

  • Such a pity that weight cannot be a personal thing. Feel sorry for all concerned as it will be a rift that will be extremely hard to heal. A lot of wrongs done on this day by all concerned.

  • Wow I don’t care who you are that is not ok. Her mother in law had no right at all. Who does she think she is anyway. Some people have medical issues or conditions which make their weight fluctuate plus if she said that to me it would of made me over think everything and cause me stress. I would never talk to her again unless she apologies and still then I might now
    How bloody rude!

  • This is not ok and boundaries need to be respected.

  • OMG, this is horrendous. To call her a pig is just outrageous. My father-in-law called me a dog in front of my mother-in-law and that was the last straw for us. My hubby has cut them out of our lives now.

  • Very harsh, that was wrong to embarrass and make her feel uncomfortable

  • I haven’t been in a situation like this – and wouldn’t want to be. The MIL’s actions and comments were totally rude, however I think the woman just made matters worse for herself by eating the takeaway fish and chips in front of her MIL. She was asking for trouble and obviously received it.

  • What an ugly thing to do! And call her a pig. Not nice at all!

  • oh no…. no one else can or should take a call on how much she eats. :(

  • I’m overweight but no-one has ever commented on it or suggested I give myself smaller portions. If we went to someone’s place for a meal, everyone got the same size meal unless they asked for less. I’m glad to say my MIL was never like that and she never commented on my size. That was so rude what her MIL said to her, I’d definitely be waiting for an apology before speaking to her again. Her husband must have thought the same or he wouldn’t have agreed to getting and eating the fish and chips with her

  • Just because mil is on a constant diet, doesn’t mean she can push it onto others, whether they are overweight or not
