Mum hosted a period party for her daughter to celebrate the special milestone, complete with a red velvet cake.

Shelly Lee, 46, from Florida in the US, told SWNS how her daughter Brooke, 14, was excited for the coming of age milestone, so she decided to do something to mark the occasion.

She said: “At the time, my daughter had been excited to get her period. When it did come I thought it would be fun to have a small celebration. It really was just our family and just a fun thing to do at home.

“I ordered the cake at a local store and when I asked them to write ‘Congratulations on your period’, they laughed. They even suggested we do a red velvet cake.

“I made her a little pack of everything she might need, tampons, pads, wipes and new underwear. I set it all up while she was in the shower.”

Lee, who also has a younger daughter, Byrnne, said she hoped the party would send a positive message to other young females.

She said: “It’s a big deal for young girls and I think it was an important message to let her know it’s nothing to be embarrassed about. We all go through it.

“It wasn’t an elaborate party at all, just a little bit of fun. I am glad it’s becoming more popular, we got a lot of positive feedback when my niece shared the images on social media.

“I think when my other daughter Brynne gets hers we will have to do another party.

“Some people roll their eyes at the idea of a period party but I think it’s harmless and sends a good message to young girls.”

I love how open this mum is, I remember mine just handing me some sanitary pads and that was pretty much it.

  • Omg I would have died of embarrassment if my mother had done something like this for me!

  • Oh I just wanted to hide from embarrassment when I got mine.

  • This is a nice thing to do, but I hope she had her daughter’s permission to post on social media.

  • Many cultures do this. As a teenager I used to work in a party shop and had many parents coming in organising a period party.

  • Only in America I guess – we were always open about everything to do with growing up in our household but I found it amazing that one of my daughters just refused to believe it was happening to her and tried everything she could to not admit it to herself. I doubt she would have reacted favourably to a party to celebrate it.

  • Just a bit of fun at home gor the daughter… great. I can see it going over the top in America and having a whole section in the party shop dedicated to it !

  • It’s lovely to be able to be so open about it and feel joy when you reach this milestone. Personally I wouldn’t throw a period party, but certainly feel for giving it some positive attention with a special gift or so.

  • This is such a cool idea & I like how they are so open about it, but I’m not sure if I would do this. Perhaps a low key celebration is nice too!

  • I know a lass who came from a country town and was boarding in a city because although she was a “junior” she was transferred with her employment. There had been a storm and the electricity had been cut so she wrote her Mum a letter and told her she had become a woman and posted it to her via the external mail from her office..
