After Coles installed security cameras at self-serve check-outs to stop people stealing items this mum has something to say….

Recently Coles ramped up its security by installing cameras at the self checkout in up to 12 supermarkets in Melbourne.

The cameras act as a deterrent by displaying the footage collected from the camera directly above the checkout monitors.

Shoppers can see themselves scan their items but this mum wasn’t having it!

Funny lady Far Kew shared on her Facebook page just what she really thought after a recent trip to her local Coles store.

“Coles, this is the face I pulled when I finally noticed your new TV screens above the self serve checkouts.

I wish I could say I was trying to scan my avocados as bananas, or put my exotic out-of-season fruits through as an iceberg lettuce, but alas, I was just trying to get one pink paper bag to put a party gift in.

You know if you’d just left Carol on the checkouts, this Big Brother approach would be unnecessary? Don’t you? There would be no unexpected items in the bagging area and no flashing attendant light because the barcode on the weigh-by-the-kilo fresh produce triggered a false scan and no awkward wrangling of round things on that stupid fucking weigh tray.

I know you’re watching me. But all you got was me hissing at my kid because I wasn’t buying a kinder egg and feeling like there was way too many people in close proximity to me when I was about to enter a two hour long kids party at Inflatable World. And probably a high res close-up of a bat in my cave.

Just another reason to shop at Aldi_australia

F#CK YOU.”

You may recall a similar post from another mum who recently begged for good old “Carol” to get her job back and help the mum checkout her groceries again. Read more here >

What do you think of the security cameras?

  • If the stores have discovered that they have a high rate of theft from the self serve checkouts then DUH…..I could ahve told them this before they were installed. Whats the cost of the extra security? Wouldnt it have been better to employ extra staff and add a couple more checkouts??

  • A sign of the times.

  • I haven’t seen them but I know there are security cameras and they wouldn’t be so in your face if people didn’t steal.

  • I agree … people are being put out of jobs and money is being spent on security cameras. I abhor those who steal at the self serve checkout. How dare they? Why should I pay increased prices for their dishonesty. Go back to all manned checkouts.

  • I do not have a problem with this. I always use the self check out. Now that we have to use our own bags, its slowed down the check outs considerably. And I have tested this theory.
Most of the time, I don’t have time to watch them slowly bag my items. So when I checkout myself I know exactly what brand of fresh produce I have and pack it how I like them packed. If Coles want to watch me closer, then so be it. I’m already being watched from the moment I walk in the store, so what’s the big deal.

  • Good on her.
Putting these machines in to take someone out of a job.
I pay top dollar for items and the big guys fill their pockets…. and now they are worried that they are loosing merchandise… get rid is the machines and give people back their jobs….. it will make one family’s life better

  • I already have a problem with Coles after they accused my son of stealing when he tried to return washing powder with his receipt purchased not even five minutes earlier (he bought the 5kgs i had requested and my husband didn’t want to pay $30 for washing powder)
After boycotting them for several weeks I have gone back as its my closest store but I can say with 100% certainty that if they put a screen that shows my face in my local store, I will NEVER shop there again.

  • Unnecessary language! I think Coles has every right to put in security cameras. They are a business and are trying to make a profit. I also wish though that they did have more people on check outs because it’s quicker for me to go through them!

    • I agree they have every right to the cameras (although its disgusting that they are so necessary) but to have them show you what you’re doing? No thanks

  • I have often seen queues at self serve checkouts. You can’t have 2 trolleys at them. One to unload onto checkout and one to put scanned groceries in. With a week’s or fortnight shopping quantity self serve is not practical. If there is a malfunction for any reason you have to wait for help anyway. When they start giving a good discount for customers who use self serve I will consider it…..not one minute before

  • I never use the self serve except for one time when I was asked to use it. Didn’t realise I had to put things in a bag so it kept beeping at me. Operator came over and showed me what to do and ended up doing it for me anyway. Serves them right. Plus if I saw a security camera there I certainly wouldn’t be using it as I hate having my picture taken. Bring back the checkout operators. No wonder there is a lot more people not working. Being taken over by technology

  • So she is saying to bring back Carol, yet still using the self serve….wait In line at a manned register. I have never been in a coles that didn’t have at least one manned register open.

  • I never use the self serve. I have asked for them to open a proper checkout and waited for that to happen because they never work for me. I hate that someone is probably out of work because of the stupid things. As far as the cameras go, well, I could care less one way or another. There are cameras everywhere anyway, so what is one more. I am not doing anything wrong, so go ahead and look at my ugly mug on the screen. But it won’t be at a self serve checkout.

  • I completely agree with her get rid of the horrid things and start employing real humans again

    • I agree with employing more people – face to face customer service is preferred.

    Reply

  • I use a checkout and do not use self serve.
I will even wait for them to open a register!

  • Carol is still on the job and hovering over me so I guess you just have to pick and choose your battles or weight in line to be served by an actual human
