A simple idea from a mother concerned about her child’s safety has become an overnight success.

Victorian mother of five, Natalie Bell, posted photos online of a seatbelt cover she made showing her daughter’s medical information in the event of a crash.

The post went viral and within days, she had thousands of orders for the covers from around the world.

The covers, which are made with Velcro so they can be fastened to seatbelts or a school bag, have bright-coloured text so they are easily seen.

Ms Bell said she made her first cover last week because she was concerned about what might happen if her daughter was in an accident and medical staff did not know she was unable to have an MRI because she had a cochlear implant.

“It’s a safety thing … because anyone can be a first responder at the scene of an accident,” she said.

“So having the details and they’re clear, they’re noticeable, it’s the first thing you’ll see when you open up that car door.”

She now has requests for the seatbelt covers in different languages, but at this stage is only making them in English.

  • These are absolutely brilliant. Only a Mum who has experienced difficulty, could come up with such a fab idea. I love it.

  • Well done, one of the best ideas I’ve ever seen.
As she said ‘ a first responder could be anyone’ Not just a medically trained person who may have dealt similar circumstances before.
    Great work

  • I have seen the same things a long time ago – at least 4 years ago. Good on her for making them for her daughter, but unfortunately it’s not a new idea that’s exclusively hers.

  • So simple but brilliant. Hope she has a patent on this idea, it will be copied by the Chinese in no time.

  • I would love to know how to order one. It would be perfect for my household. Also it would only be on the seatbelt when the person who needed it was in that seat.
Can anyone tell me how to order one and the cost?

  • I saw these some years ago! They were made by someone else, I believe. Those ones had the persons full name and age etc on there, which I thought was a security issue, especially with young children. As great as we all think they are, I’m not so sure emergency services will pay them much attention as they have no real way of knowing that the person sitting there is the person the sash is intended for.

  • I recall there being a safety warning about putting things similar to that on baby seat and booster seat harnesses but I think they were referring to thick bulky novelty ones,
