A blogger Mum writes handwritten notes on her kid’s lunch bags but they aren’t quite what you’d expect…

Getting through to teenagers is a constant challenge, but California Mum Whitney Cicero has come up with an innovative way to get the attention of her 14 year old daughter and 12 year old son. The blogger Mum sends her kids to school with their lunch in ‘passive aggressive lunch bags’ sharing her innermost thoughts with her children via written messages on the side of the bags.

Nothing Is Taboo

Whitney told Today that honesty and humour are central to a good parent child relationship. “It’s imperative to have humour with your kids,” she said. “We joke about everything – sex, drugs, politics, their bodies – I don’t want them to think anything is taboo. Humour is a great segue into having meaningful conversations and it helps break the tension of things that can be kind of awkward. And if we don’t have a sense of humour about parenting, we will literally lose our minds”

It seems like nothing is off limits, with the lunch bag messages including ‘Fortnite is not a career choice’, ‘Clean up your room’, ‘Get off your phone’ and ‘I can’t wait for you to drive either’ – we feel like Whitney is reading the minds of parents with teens worldwide!

The Perfect Stocking Filler

When her daughter’s classmates started to notice the messages and take an interest in them, Whitney was inspired to share pictures of the bags online nineHONEY reports, and is even selling the bags on her new website! Offering a selection of popular messages, as well as personalised bags, we can’t help thinking they’d make a hilarious Christmas gift. “I hope everyone gets their kids a pack for their stockings!” Whitney said.

We think Whitney’s idea is genius – after all, what better way to keep the lines of communication open and have a laugh with your kids at the same time. Plus we’re sure she gets extra brownie points with her kids’ classmates for providing daily lunchtime entertainment. She’s definitely a ‘cool Mum.’

  • I sometimes draw faces on my kids fruit :) ….but mostly I leave little notes telling them that they are awesome and loved etc. The other stuff, the serious stuff we talk about face to face at home or in the car. I think my teenagers would be embarrassed if I did this on their lunch bags.

  • Haha what a smart kid.
I’m sure they will look back and appreciate the effort mum took in drafting personalised messages

  • Kids won’t read their paper lunch bags.

  • I can’t imagine writing these type of messages on the lunch bags of my teens. By that age they’re too old for this type of patronizing messages and they’re for everyone to read = shaming them in front of their friends.
I leave sometimes a wee note in the lunchbox of my 8year old, a small message to remind her of something or to tell her I love her, but only to see for her.

  • As teenagers, I was lucky if my kids even touched their packed lunches :/ so much of it used to come home untouched. And if they did eat some, they would just root around in their bag and grab something. No way would the whole bag be removed from their school bag. So this would be a waste of time fir me
