Our MoM’s have been sharing some of the advice they received during pregnancy, and some of it is just downright ridiculous!

We asked on Facebook “What random advice has someone given you during pregnancy? Was it useful or terrifying?”

Jacki replied, “I had someone suggest smoking marijuana to combat my severe morning sickness… I told them I’d rather the vomiting.”

Holly told us she has someone she worked with tell her she wasn’t supposed to put her arms above her head while pregnant. “This person was trained as a nurse and should have known better.” Holly added that it is in fact an old wives tale to do with the circulation apparently.

Other people responsed to Holly saying they too were told similar:

“I was told that by my friend. Apparently the umbilical cord is supposed to wrap round the babies neck. Her mum believed it as the cord was wrapped round her neck at birth.”

Caroline said, “I was advised to avoid butcher shops and raw meat by my sisters -great advice as raw meat made me sick.

Massage the peritoneum with oil -don’t know if it was useful but it was painful and uncomfortable.

Eat sunflower seeds for nausea and hot flushes – worked a treat and got me through some bad times.”

Christie shared, “I was told by my gp a couple of weeks ago not to eat any food that comes out of a tin can.”

Have you received any really random advice during pregnancy?

  • I dont really think I was ever told anything that was foolish.
My Doc told me just to listen to my body and if I had any serious cravings to try and satisfy them as it was my bodies way of telling me what i needed.

  • I didn’t get as much craxzy advice when I was pregnant as when I’d had the baby. Luckily, with number 3 on the way, I take in what I think in necessary & let the crap flow straight out the other ear!!

    • That is the way to do it! All the best with the new baby!

  • Everyone has advice when your pregnant. My indian friend said forget everyone telling you to not eat spicy. Eat everything! As she believes because she was so strict with what she ate because of her mother in law her daughter is a fussy eater lol my advice is go with the flow. Eat when hungry dont just go crazy. And enjoy your sleep and relax.

  • I was just sick of people giving me advice about food allergies, from those that didn’t have any. It’s genetics…… not what the mum did or didn’t eat during pregnancy.

  • A woman around her late 60’s who served me in an expensive children’s wear shop told me during my first pregnancy, advised me not to expect I would necessarily live, because someone she knew had died giving birth. I didn’t know how to respond to that, and it really sent fear through me.

  • My great grandmother who is in her 90’s told me that I should not have too many ultrasounds unless I wanted to harm the baby.

  • Pregnancy is such a beautiful time. Well it’s meant to be.
Omg it can really bring out the “nut” in some. It’s almost like a strange reaction can occur in a select, luckily not to common few who stir a negative, unsettled feeling in ones stomach.
Don’t let the crazies get to you. Of course some of it’s deliberate. The sooner you realise there will be “haters” the more you can protect yourself from some not so nice advice or stories. One lady would tell me “miscarriage” stories.
Wean out those and enjoy the rest. Many genuinely care and love a pregnancy story and want to help.

  • I was told a few already mentioned in post but also to have sex to bring on labour as i was overdue, also to have some castor oil which would bring on labour, also a few others i can’t remember and my mum said i needed really short hair since I wouldn’t have time to wash it which wasn’t true so i had this short boys type haircut for no reason and it didn’t even suit me so thanks mum for that one.
