Sydney mum issues warning after her frightening ordeal using a public baby change table.

Rene Cadey was having lunch at the Woolwich Pier Hotel and used the disabled bathroom to change two year old Louis’ nappy.

She says her son, who weighs 13.5 kilos, lay there she stepped back to wipe her hands.

It was at this moment the change station and wall fitting broke away from the wall, reports 7 news.

“Louis was dropped to the tiled floor with the change station landing on top of him. I don’t believe I’ve ever been so scared in all my life,” Ms Cadey wrote on Facebook. (which has since been removed)

Paramedics were called and the hysterical and frightened boy was taken to Royal North Shore hospital to be assessed.

“We discovered where the table had hit the back of his head in two places, he had a nasty bump and some bleeding,” Ms Cadey wrote.

“Louis was monitored for the next five hours and we were thankfully discharged once they were satisfied he hadn’t sustained any brain or spinal damage.”

Despite being given the all-clear, Ms Cadey is calling for more to be done to ensure this doesn’t happen again.

“In the wake of the incident and our immeasurable relief that Louis is progressing well, we’ve been trying to understand how this could have possibly happened!

“As parents we trust that we can use these facilities safely. It is clear that this is not the case,” she wrote.

In the past a mums post went viral after sharing a very important warning to parents about using change tables in public areas. Read more on that here.

  • Not the first one of these articles I’ve seen recently, very scary. I’m glad my kids are too old for them now, and hope they all require checks for safety before being able to be used.

  • That is scary stuff right there.

  • Unfortunately these types of change tables are always in poor condition. If I cannot find a bench change table then I usually find a discrete location to change my son on a change mat

  • Poor little possum. I’ve always been a bit worried about how stable they are on the wall!

    • These facilities need to be constantly maintained.

  • This is terrible and I can only imagine how frightening and upsetting and shocking this would have been. Terrible neglect and lack of duty of care and many more regulations I imagine that is on the Shopping Centre. Thank God this child is okay.

Are these tables subject to routine safety checks, annual, biannual.
I’m going to check them all next time I use them.

  • How terrifying. They should be subject to safety standards not only in design but in fitting as well.

  • My goodness I would’ve been just as terrified. How scary for both mum and Bub. Glad he is ok

  • Very scary, I’ve seen my fair share of unsafe looking ones

  • I feel like these kinds of change facilities don’t get any maintenance done at all. The number of wobbly ones I’ve come across has made me paranoid. I do wonder though what the weight would be for these.
