Expert issues a warning of the dangers in using old Tupperware.

Tamara Rubin an independent advocate for consumer goods safety has issued a warning to people who still use the good old fashioned (original) Tupperware.

She discovered during a recent test of Tupperware’s yellow vintage measuring cups, not only lead, but she also found arsenic as well.

In a post on her website on the disturbing results, Tamara urges everyone to think twice before using the measuring cups.

She writes: ‘I had heard they could be positive for very high levels of Lead, and have always discouraged people from using them — but had never personally tested any vintage Tupperware cookware items that were positive for toxicants…until…now! While I knew they might have Lead, I was frankly quite surprised to also find Arsenic!’

Tamara adds that she also tested other colours in the Tupperware vintage ranges and found Mercury and Cadmium.

Tamara says that it’s important that people know the risks.

‘Of additional concern is that many of these vintage Tupperware pieces have been kept in regular daily service for their 40+ years of life and may have considerable wear and deterioration as a result of decades of heavy regular use,’ she says.

Adds Tamara: ‘While there may not be a single incident of Lead poisoning (or Arsenic poisoning for that matter) that can be traced to a kitchen item like this (because that is a difficult thing to track and study, given how many potential sources of toxicants can be found in our lives – in many things we use every day), with multiple toxicants present, at the levels found here, there is no defensible reason to save items like this and use them for food use purposes.’

  • I guess standards just were not as high back then as they are now.
I remember about 30 years ago a case of a young girl that was very sick and it turned out she had lead poisioning and they discovered that it had come from her favoritie mug.

  • This is concerning. My mum’s friend is a Tupperware sales person and she said that Tupperware has a lifetime guarantee. I have replaced 20-year-old Tupperware lids and containers for free. I’m not sure, but I would suspect that they would replace any containers for free if these concerns were expressed.

  • Just wondering did she only test her own Tupperware or a big cross section? May be they were used for measuring paint or something in the past and had traces of residue left in them? If it was only found in measuring cups this is more likely as the factory would make all Tupperware with the same plastic so it is highly unlikely they would use a different composition for making only the measuring cups. As they are old they would have had many things ensured in them over the years.

  • There is also arsenic in rice, I think we all just need to realize we have to keep our livers healthy so it can work on getting all this poison out of our system instead of building up in our bodies. We live in a toxic world and keeping our exposure to a minimum as much as possible is important. Use your old tupperware for anything but food. Use glass instead.
