NEW Easter bun flavours have been labelled a “national disgrace.”

The TODAY show shared how the internet has been divided in an online bunfight over the introduction of extravagant hot cross bun flavours to our supermarket shelves.

Some people have welcomed the new flavours with open arms but others aren’t convinced, labelling them a “national disgrace.”

Even a hot cross bun ice cream has been released.

While some people said it was such a first world problem, and others argued each to their own, just don’t buy them if you don’t like them. Others agreed that the true meaning of the Easter bun has totally been lost.

Comments included:

“I tasted a banana and caramel early January, it was foul! It was also reduced so I should have known better.”

“I don’t like the fruit so fruitless is the go with me and I like the chocolate ones.”

“They can be all year round I love them and the flavours..yummo”

“It’s truly gone, the real reason for easter sadly and what the hot cross bun stood for.”

“All these horrid new flavours and you still cannot buy a traditional hot cross bun with peel in it….seriously!!!!!”

” The original it’s good enough.”

“I love the plain old Easter Buns with fruit and peel.”

Why we eat fruit buns at Easter

In many historically Christian countries, the buns are traditionally eaten on Good Friday, with the cross standing as a symbol of the crucifixion.

  • I like the traditional Hot Cross Buns but they can be purchased all year round so they are not so exciting for me any more.

  • I hate the peel ones, reason I’ve never liked fruit cake. I don’t see people eating the peel when they have an orange so why put it in food? I like the apple and cinnamon ones.

  • I don’t like the ones with peel in, I do like just the fruit ones and the different chocolate ones are pretty good too. Yum!

  • they are just bringing out too many different ones now – they are loosing there appeal a little bit!

  • I like some of the new flavours. But if you don’t like them, don’t eat them.

  • I have noticed many new flavours this year but simply haven’t tried them. We’ve just had our first pack of the traditional hot cross buns last week. I did absolutely love a Mocha version Baker’s Delight did for a short time a few years ago. I find the chocolate version too sweet, and the fruit-free versions too bland. So, it’s the original for me.

  • I haven’t tried any new flavours. I do like the chocolate ones! But I also like the normal fruit ones too (with butter). I couldn’t care less if they bring more flavours out.

  • For me, its the traditional fruit or the fruitless. Not a fan of the other flavours, although I have tried them. I look forward to Easter for the buns far more than for chocolate.

  • If you dun like them dun buy them. Why make a big fuss

  • Just because they bring out new flavours doesn’t mean we have to buy them. It’s like anything new that is introduced, no-one is twisting your arm to buy so just leave them for someone else. I personally buy the fruitless ones because I don’t like fruit in anything. I will buy the original but they are for anyone else who visits.

  • In this house only on Good Friday and we make them ourselves. I do make choc ones with choc chips for my youngest ones as treats.

    • I like making them my self too with wholemeal spelt flour and seeds added :)

  • I just love the variety in flavours. Turns them into an Easter dessert in our home.

  • If people don’t like these new flavours, don’t eat them. Variety is the spice of life. It is disappointing that the stores insist on selling them directly after Christmas. People must buy them or they wouldn’t continue to stock them.
