The French parliament voted to banish the words “mother” and “father” from official paperwork in the education system to tackle discrimination against gay parents.

Children’s documents will instead refer to Parent 1 and Parent 2.

MPs from President Macron’s Republique en Marche party passed the legal amendment in the interests of “anchoring in the diversity of families of children in the law”. Gay marriage became legal in France six years ago, shares The Australian.

The amendment says: “To prevent discrimination, school enrolment, class registers, parental authorisations and all other official forms involving children must mention only Parent 1 and Parent 2.”

The move has angered conservatives and Christians who argue that it signals the country’s moral decline.

France not alone!

To be honest, I was more shocked that it still had “Mother and Father” listed for details.

Our school documents have always had “Emergency contact” or “Contact” and then “Relationship” details.

Does your school still include Mother and Father on file?

  • I can’t remember a time that any forms or letters had mother or father on them. Ours are parents/guardians or parent a/parent b

  • As far as I know I see on many forms parent 1 and parent 2 here as well.

  • The school my younger children go to has a choice of who you are. My daughter in high school has space for three child carers.

  • If they really want to be politically correct they should put Guardian on it too.

    • I agree. Often it does give the option parent/carer.

  • Don’t see an issue with it. I’m sure they still ask relationship to child and you are able to put “mother” “father” etc

  • Our kinder forms and the school forms refer to us as parent A and parent B

  • I think that’s a fair change

  • My daughters daycare enrolment says parent 1 parent 2. Nothing really new or earth shattering.

  • Way too much political correctness.

  • So to avoid discriminating against gay parents (the minority) they instead decide to discriminate against straight parents (the majority) I just don’t see a good reason for this. I’m mum and my partner is dad, but we can’t be on school admin papers. Very sad

  • Ours says Parent 1 and Parent 2.

  • My daughter is in high school and in school documents it also appears “Parent 1″ and “Parent 2″.
