It is still not too late to plan and execute the perfect Mother’s Day. It might be getting close, but a desperate dad can still get the job done.

These five steps can enable your family to give mum the perfect Mother’s Day.

Phase One: Know Mum

Remember, this day is not about you, Dad. Mother’s Day failures usually only happen when Dad isn’t purposeful in his planning and presentation. Know what Mum enjoys. Know what makes Mum smile. Know what Mum wishes she could have for at least one day. Her friends and the children sometimes have insights that are worth investigating. Asking her is a better idea. Knowing what Mum thinks is a good Mother’s Day is the beginning of a memorable day.

Phase Two: One Big Thing

Memorable Mother’s Days usually have one particular thing that makes an impression. It doesn’t have to be a new car, or a diamond necklace. But find one idea around which to centre the day. A gift is good, but a theme also is worthwhile. Perhaps a big thing for Mum would be a day in which she does no Mum work. The family can cook. The family can do the cleaning. The family can do laundry. The family can let Mum relax.

Other ideas might include a Mother’s Day poem, written by the whole family that tells Mum how important she is. Or perhaps a day in which she is given time to do some gardening. Or a day in which she doesn’t have to do any gardening. If the one big thing is based on solid Mum knowledge, it will be sure to give Mum a fantastic Mother’s Day, perhaps for the first time.

Phase Three: Many Little Things

But little things mean a lot, too. Garnish the one big thing with a series of little things. From the morning’s first greeting, let Mother’s Day be mother’s day. Words, of course, are little things. Take turns every hour having a family member tell her, “happy Mother’s Day,” or give some more small mother’s day poems, or tell her a happy joke, or simply ask her what else she would like.

But don’t rely only on words. Make sure you open doors for her on Mother’s Day. Hold her hand. Give a few small gifts, like a bit of chocolate, or a useful household item.

Phase Four: Include the Children

It is Mother’s Day, after all. Make sure the children are involved in every step. From the first phase, until the final goodnight, include the children. Let them give a big gift, even if Dad bought it. Find little things for the children to do throughout the day. Help them make homemade cards, write notes, sing songs, and give hugs.

Phase Five: All Day Long

The perfect Mother’s Day will not happen from a big price tag. The perfect Mother’s Day occurs when the whole day is Mum’s. From sun up to sundown, plan the day for her to enjoy. Family activities, many smiles, and the attention she should receive every day will help her know she is loved and appreciated.

Give Mum the perfect Mother’s Day… all day long.
