Temperatures are set to soar into the high thirties in Sydney CBD and climb as high as 40˚C in Sydney’s western suburbs, health authorities issue warning to parents.

In a statement NSW Health urged people with respiratory conditions to take caution with high air pollution levels in Sydney forecast today.

The NSW Office of Environment and Heritage have advised NSW Health that Sydney is predicted to experience poor air quality tomorrow due to high ozone levels.

Ozone pollution is caused by car exhaust and industrial fumes and gets worse on hot, still days.

Dr Ben Scalley, Director of Environmental Health Branch, NSW Health, is reminding people to be alert to the link between high temperatures and ozone pollution.

“Ozone levels are higher outdoors than indoors, so parents should limit the time their children with asthma play outside as they are more susceptible to the effects of ozone pollution,” Dr Scalley said.

“Ozone levels reach their peak around 7pm in the evening and tend to be lowest in the morning, so it’s best to plan outdoor play in the morning when the day is cooler

“Asthma sufferers need to follow their Asthma Action Plan and take their relieving medication where necessary. If symptoms get worse, asthma sufferers need to seek medical advice.

In November more than 2,000 people suffered breathing problems in Melbourne after a severe storm combined with an extreme pollen count caused a mass incident of what is being described as “thunderstorm asthma”.

Not all people who experience thunderstorm asthma have suffered with asthma previously.

If you are experiencing symptoms or having trouble breathing during this heatwave, seek medical assistance immediately.

  • Get your children to put their hands in cold water as often as possible throughout the day. It will keep them cool and they will thank you for it. Seems to stop the sneezes as well.
