A major hospital has banned parents from using professional photographers to document the birth of their babies.

Royal Brisbane Hospital informed patients and birth photographers they were not allowed to take photos while births were underway.

Photos can still be taken before and after birth, and fathers and other family members can snap shots on their mobile phones.

The hospital said the policy was not new and existed to ensure the safety of the baby and mother during the delivery.

‘Complications are rare, but can arise very quickly during a birth,’ executive director Amanda Dines told the Courier Mail.

‘So it’s crucial our team can perform their duties with the utmost care and attention, with no other distraction, so they can continue to provide focused care.’

‘Professional photography and digital recording of births before and after delivery are supported, provided they do not interfere with the important role of our clinical staff in ensuring both mother and baby are safe.’

Ms Dines said personal photos by mums and dads were ‘more than welcome’.

  • Good for them. I dont really think that a professional photographer is needed but hey each to their own. I agree with the hospital rule though.

  • More important that bub and Mum receive the utmost attention and are kept safe rather than getting a photo, talking about not being in the moment.

  • Better that the staff can take care of mum and bub than having a photographer in the way.

  • Understandable decision.
I have photo’s from before and after the delivery, but actually would have loved some of the delivery as well now I look back.

  • No interest in professional photographers before, during or after.

    • Oops! Should read ‘before, during or after birth’. We loved candid photos which were just personal for us. We took them ourselves.

  • The hospitals first and main responsibility is the health and safety of the mother and child so they make rules in line with that.

  • I can see their point, thanks for sharing.

  • I didn’t want a photographer at my birth, way too much things that I didn’t want to see

  • that’s fair enough – who gets a professional in anyway? It’s a very private time.

  • i have no problem with a parent taking a photo, however a professional photographer that i do have a problem with. The doctors have enough on their plate without having a person moving around the room getting in the way whilst trying to do what is best for baby & mother, i am with the hospital all the way on this

  • I can see both sides of this dilemma but am more towards family members only being in at the actual birth. Ultimately the safety of the mother and newborn must come first.

  • I believe that it should be up to the parents, but also agree that it shouldn’t in anyway interfere with the care and support from staff

  • I think it’s up to the parents, but personally I think it’s Mum or dad who should take pics. There just seems to be too many people going into birthing suites

  • I think this is pretty reasonable.

  • I would prefer to know I was being as safe as possible for my baby and myself
