A Woolworths mud cake had shoppers in an uproar on Father’s Day.

The chocolate cake with icing reading ‘Special Person’s Day’ was photographed sitting with a pile of others prepared for sale in the lead-up to the national day for celebrating male roles models.

Other cakes had white icing reading ‘dad’ and ‘pop’, with only one bearing the controversial alternative tribute.

A photo was shared on social media and reposted more than a hundred times to the supermarket’s Facebook page, with most shoppers outraged, shared Daily Mail.

Many shoppers, either on Wooloworths’ page or elsewhere on social media, vowed to never shop at the retail giant again.

Woolworths said it was investigating the display but that it ‘appears to be a one-off incident’.

‘We’re currently looking into this display with our store teams. We want to re-assure you that we’re helping all customers across Australia celebrate Father’s Day as seen from our store displays, products and recipe ideas,’ it said.

Dr Red Ruby Scarlet is pushing for the annual day on the first Sunday in September to be renamed so children without fathers aren’t offended. Read more on that HERE.

Do you think the cake was a good sales move or did they cross a line?

  • One of my son’s best friends never gets to celebrate Father’s Day as her Dad died when she was a baby, I’m sure she would love the opportunity to celebrate with a special person in her life.
I also wish that our local store stocked the Pop cakes as my Dad would be chuffed to receive one.
Move on with life people there are far worse things to be concerned about than ‘Special person day’ being written on a cake… like not having a special person to celebrate with.

  • I like to have set days recognised such as Father’s Day, Mother’s Day, Christmas other days and have no issue with a Special Person’s Day. Not sure why anyone would be outraged by writing on a cake; grab the cake you want and move on to enjoying the day.

  • I like the idea

  • I can’t understand why people are outraged about this ?!
My friend’s husband ran off as soon she got pregnant. Her daughter who’s 13 years old now never had a father. This daughter hunkers for her father especially on fathers day. She often spoils her uncle (who is her special person) on Fathers day. She would have loved to give this cake to her uncle on fathers day, not on a different day.

  • I didn’t get to spend a single fathers day with my dad in my whole life. And it sucked being that kid. Woolies still had the majority of cakes for dads. Instead of instantly getting outraged, maybe consider for a second that someone who buys this cake might might be hurting on this day every year about the fact they can’t buy a dad cake?

  • Really is it that big a deal to stress about – it’s a mud cake with a simple message “happy special person’s day”. I think there needs to be more caring and sharing and niceness in our world and everyone needs to stop getting stressed and angry about little things like this! – so one store had one cake that had a different message – i would buy it and give it proudly if I was in a situation where I didn’t have a father to celebrate on fathers day, I would give it to the next closest person who represented a father like role

    • I agree with the need for more caring and sharing – the world would be a better place for it!

  • maybe they should create another day just for those “special people” and leave father’s day for the fathers! there ARE many great men out there so why not treat them to the respect and recognition that they deserve?

  • I honestly don’t have a problem with this. People without a dad may want to celebrate someone else that day. It was one cake out of a range. Get a grip.

  • They should have just had Father’s Day cakes as it was Father’s Day!

  • They still had easter buns on sale here in June.. and not reduced just like normal in the bread area. Their just out to make money any way they can and getting their name in the news is free advertising isn’t it.

  • Whats the big deal
I got a card from school from my son
A lot of kids don’t have a male role model in the family
People get offended for stupid reasons these days

  • I don’t have a problem with this at all and don’t understand the outrage. Not everyone has a father or grandfather in their life but they may have a special uncle or male friend.

  • some people get offended by everything, those people offend me! haha Get over it, if you don’t like it don’t buy it

  • I wish they had this option yrs ago!!! As a single mum who was always given fathers day gifts from my sons as they said I was Mum and DAD to them, this would have been perfect. It should be made available on mothers day too for all the brilliant single dads out there.

  • I find it very weird. Why does everything need to be renamed? Soon we won’t be able to buy cards with written “Merry Christmas”. There will be written “Merry Special Day” instead.
