A US paediatrician has taken to social media to shock some common sense into parents who are allowing their kids to ride bikes without a safety helmet.

Dr Free N Hess, the founder of website PediMom, shared on Facebook  recently, “I see children in my Pediatric ER for head trauma after falling from a bike very often.”

“Some of these children are struck by cars but many sustain head injuries simply from losing control of their bikes while riding. Helmets in this situation can make the difference between a simple concussion and severe neurological injury and even death.

A recent poll conducted by The University of Michigan showed that 18% of parents admit their children don’t wear helmets. That’s 1 in 5.

This does not make sense to me.

Take a look at the helmet below. Imagine this blow being taken by a child’s head WITHOUT the protection of a helmet.

If you or a child is riding a bike, skateboard, ice skates, roller skates, hover boards, scooter, or anything else that has a risk of head trauma you need to have a helmet on. EVERY TIME.

Set a good example and make sure you always wear one too. Your kids need you just as much as you need them!”

In Australia when riding a bicycle you are required by law to wear an approved helmet securely fitted and fastened.

Research shows that helmets reduce head injuries by up to 74 per cent in crashes with motor vehicles.

A bicycle helmet that is not correctly fitted and fastened does not provide enough protection in a crash.

If you ever doubted the importance of wearing a bike helmet then hopefully this story makes you realise just how crucial they are!

  • I cringe when I see kids riding around without a helmet, even on scooters. I always make sure my kids wear one, and myself.

  • As the saying goes, if you don’t need a head you don’t need a helmet

  • I have seen what happens when a child does not wear a helmet and when one does wear one. My oldest son was riding his bike and had a golf club on his handle bars. The club slipped onto his front wheel, lucky he was wearing a helmet. Boy (ok but sore) bike, club & helmet ( damaged). A friend of one of my children was not wearing a helmet and he hit a tree. It took him months to recover from the injuries.

  • That’s actually really scary. Hope it gets through to some people. Some accidents can be prevented.

  • So stupid in this day and age not to be wearing a helmet – hope this paediatrician gets through to those not bothering in the USA

  • A pro skater on Bondi Rescue tonight had a stack and landed head first and was knocked out and blood everywhere because he wasn’t wearing a helmet. If that can happen to a professional, then its about a million times more likely to happen to a kid. Helmets definitely save lives and its just not worth the risk of not wearing one.

  • We live in a generation that know the risks. Putting on a helmet should be as common as putting on a seat belt.

  • makes me so angry to see young kids out with their folks and not wearing helmets almost as much as i hate people not using crossings with their kids

  • Definitely need to wear them might not need them most of the time which is why people become complacent but you won’t know when you do need one until it’s too late.

  • This is such a simple precaution to take, really.

  • Wow! Although helmets aren’t ‘cool’ they are definitely a necessity when riding. Better the helmet to be damaged than your head!!

  • This will shock some of you. I grew up in the Netherlands and lived there till I was 38yrs old. I didn’t drive a car and did everything on the bike, bike was my major transport medium. I never ever wore a helmet, to be honest nobody does there, unless you bike as a sport.
My dad is 88yrs old and still goes on his bike without a helmet.

    • Strange indeed that in The Netherlands there is no rule about that. On the other side, riding a bicycle there is quite safe, with all the bicycles lanes. We can’t say the same in Australia.

      • In Australia a lot of the bike lanes aren’t safe as the bitumen is already broken or is cracking. If you catch one of them at the wrong angle good luck staying upright on your bike. I have seen a lot of people (not just kids) with their helmets swinging on the handles of their bikes or on but the strap not done up at all. I have heard comments from girls saying they won’t wear theirs because it will mess their hair up.
