People are criticising the new season of ’13 Reasons Why’ for its depiction of a school shooting after recent events.

Watchdog group the Parents Television Council called on the media streaming company to boot the show altogether, according to Daily Mail.

The council said that the second season, which was set to premiere this month, is ‘a ticking time bomb to teens and children.’

Season 2 is based on the aftermath of a teen girl’s passing. It includes a scene about a thwarted high school dance shooting.

Parents Television Council issued a warning to parents and schools.

‘We’re issuing a warning about @Netflix’s #13 Reasons Why Season 2 and urging the company to pull the series entirely because of the potentially harmful content,’ the statement said in part.

On Friday, 10 innocent people were shot dead after 17-year-old Dimitrios Pagourtzis opened fire during an early morning art class at Santa Fe High School in Texas.

The controversial season release also follows the February Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School school shooting in Florida that was brought on by 19-year-old Nikolas Cruz. 17 people were killed.

The first season of ’13 Reasons Why’ received heavy criticism for its depiction of suicide, rape, eating disorders and a variety or mental health issues. Read more on that here.

  • I have not seen the first season as we don’t have Netflix but was curious to see what all the outrage was about. I’ve recently received an FB post shared by a teen in my son’s friendship group who is angry at outrage and discontent. She claims it’s important viewing for teenagers and adults need to understand how teens are thinking and what’s really going on with them. The post and commentary from the teen was a different perspective and one that maybe we should consider. I think it’s worth discussing. We need to keep talking and understanding.

  • I think in this day and age these sort of issues need to be discussed. This series is a good starting point for an open discussion.

    • I’m so with you. My kids are too young for this show at the moment I feel, but my daughter is off to High School next year and I think at some stage further down the track I will watch it with her and use it as a platform to speak about these topics raised

  • Where has the age of innocence gone? When I was growing up, The Wonderful World of Disney and The Brady Bunch were so much fun to watch. I’ve never liked watching “dark” shows.

  • I don’t know this series, but sounds like its ‘mirrowing’ real life issues and one can only hope with showing it, teenagers experience recognition and feel more free to open discussion and get help.

  • The show explores some controversial things that need to be addressed in our society and schools. I think it is good that it has sparked debate. These things are real and happening to our children we can’t just live with our heads in the sand.

  • One would hope that these movies are done in such a way that a good lesson can be learned from then – otherwise they shouldn’t be made.

  • I don’t think we can cancel all the tv shows, movies, music that people blame their terrible acts on.

    • Yeah if you don’t like it, don’t watch it.

  • I don’t think a school shooting can be blamed on a tv show, there were shootings long before this tv show. The USA needs to have a long hard look at their gun control laws and hoot from there

  • I haven’t even watched the first season yet. But I heard indeed about the controversy it sparkled.

  • These issues are important to explore but it needs to be done responsibly particularly when the show is aimed it young people. I have never personally seen this show nor do I know the background but I would hope they would have the appropriate professionals to advise them.
