Parents thinking of giving their children a drone this Christmas should make sure they understand the dangers first.

The Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA) says it’s paramount kids know the rules of flying drones before getting carried away with the excitement of trialling their new presents.

A fine of up to $10,000 can be imposed if drone safety is not enforced, shares 9 news.

Some of the drone rules include staying more than 30 metres from people at all times and never flying within 5.5 kilometres of major airports.

Drones should also be kept in sight at all times and should stay below 120 metres.

“Parents and carers have a responsibility to teach their kids about drone safety and to supervise flights until it is clear the kids know how to fly safely,” CASA’s director of aviation safety Shane Carmody said in a statement on Wednesday.

Is a drone on your child’s Santa list?

  • Drones are dangerous, and intrusive.

  • Definitely not a toy or something I would be buying my child. I personally don’t really like them in the suburbs. We had one hovering above our house and I didn’t like it at all. I’m totally fine with people using it for photography or real estate etc. but not people just having a Play and snooping in the backyard

  • No, there are no drones on Santa’s list here.

  • Some people I live near have told by the Police that if we have one literally hovering over houses to contact them as it is illegal to do so unless you have a special permit to do so. We had an incident where we observed one for 10 minutes after we realised it was up above us. It was un-nerving and upsetting for aged people. They thought it was going to crash. Some have cameras, others don’t.

  • Personally I do not consider drones as toys.. and yes indeed there are a lot of rules you must follow.

  • Very important to know the rules around the use of drones. Not something my daughter asked for.
