Peppa Pig has been accused of sexism by London fire chiefs.

London Fire Brigade tweeted a show clip and said: “We’ve not been firemen for 30 years.

“You have a huge influence on kids. Out-of-date stereotypical gender specific wording prevents girls from becoming firefighters.”

Twitter users ridiculed the brigade. One said: “Don’t tell Postman Pat.”

Other Comments include:

“Come on London fire Brigade lighten up does everything have to be an issue, this is another example of the world gone nuts, how about taking the comment to be innocent and harmless, that is exactly what it was. nothing stops girls becoming Firefighters.”

“I wanted to be a firefighter, but then I watched Peppa pig and it changed by mind. Said no woman ever.”

“Fight fires , leave politics alone.”

“But the fire “people”/”animals” in the cartoon #PeppaPig were female. Surely they should have been called “fireanimals” as that is what they are.”

A follow up tweet from the Brigade read, “Well we’ve sparked a lot of debate. We challenge outdated language for girls like Grace who get told they can’t become firefighters because ‘firefighters are men’. Hopefully it won’t take another 30 years for people to accept that we’re all firefighters.”

  • I wasn’t ever once told I couldn’t be a ‘fireman’ growing up. It wasn’t even implied. There are tons of girls in my local fire brigade and the local ses too.
