Peppa Pig has been accused by doctors for creating “unrealistic expectations”.

In an article published this week in the British Medical Journal, doctor and mother Catherine Bell examined whether the character “Dr Brown Bear” was responsible for people filling up waiting rooms and demanding house calls for minor ailments, shares Yahoo.

Dr Bell writes that the cartoon character “appears to provide his patients with an excellent service—prompt and direct telephone access, continuity of care, extended hours, and a low threshold for home visits”.

But Dr Bell questions whether Dr Brown Bear’s depiction of general practice is contributing to “unrealistic expectations of primary care”.

Dr Bell concluded that “exposure to Peppa Pig and its portrayal of general practice raises patient expectation and encourages inappropriate use of primary care services”.

She also argued that the cartoon bear appeared to be administering antibiotics in an era of rising antibiotic resistance and his workload has him showing signs of burnout.

An episode of the children’s show Peppa Pig has been banned from Australian TV for telling children spiders “can’t hurt you”. READ MORE.

What do you think of Dr Bell’s claims? With so many home doctor services available today, surely it is not that unrealistic?

  • Omg what next! What a ridiculous waste of a supposedly intelligent doctors time! My 2 year old knows Peppa is not real yet this woman is comparing Dr Brown Bear to human doctors! That’s 5 minutes of my life wasted reading this twaddle.

  • Seriously! It is a TV show and fiction – adults and children do know the difference!

  • I agree that it was right to take off the episode where it mentions that spiders will not hurt you. Children old enough to watch the show would think that was true.

  • it is just a tv show where the characters aren’t even REAL. I think that the doctors could step their game up though as back in the day, they used to care and provide services like that

  • How dare pepper pig tell us to expect a high level of care from doctors!
Seriously though. You have bigger problems if you’re getting medical advice from pepper pig.

    • I agree with your comment – there are so many fictional and fun characters. When we did renovations we did not get advice from Bob the Builder! ;)

  • Really ? It’s just a tv program ! are we going to take Fireman Sam or Postman Pet or Ben and Holly’s little kingdom serious too ?

  • Geez, it’s just a tv show!

  • Yep, we’d better ban it then (sarcasm). What a bunch of kill joys we’ve become. It’s not like Popeye influenced kids to eat vegetables straight from the can, Noddy didn’t influence kids to start up a taxi service and generations of children didn’t throw their pants away because Humphrey B. Bear never wore any. As for the spider episode, surely that’s up to parents to point the obvious out to their children.

  • On the other side kids learn so much from such a cartoon. And if it spreads messages like that spiders don’t hurt you, I find it quite questionable.

  • It’s a cartoon. Fiction. You can only blame it for so much!
