Did you know playing loud music in your car could see you fined up to $200?!

Australians who play loud music in their cars could face massive fines from the police, reports Daily Mail.

If you are blasting loud music from your car in these states you could be fined up to $175 in Queensland and $200 in New South Wales.

The aim is to apparently reduce people’s exposure to noise pollution from other vehicles on the road.

Police usually warn drivers but consequences increase if the request to turn the music down is ignored.

Not locking your car also an offence

In some states in Australia you can also receive a fine if you don’t lock your car doors, or leave the windows of an unattended car wound down too far.

In Victoria, drivers could be fined up to $360 if they fail to comply with the law.

They can also be penalised if the windows of a parked car are wound down more than five centimetres.

What do you think? Too extreme?

  • It would have to be super loud and the police would ahve to be in the right location for someone to be fined.

  • Unfortunately we need to legislate not being a nuisance to others. The unlocked and windows is to deter car theft.

  • I have not heard of any of these laws before, nor do I know of anyone that has ever been fined for them.

  • Is the music thing if the windows are open and the sound is so loud it annoys others? I haven’t heard of this before. The unlocked/windows too far down thing is common sense.

  • Do wish this law was also in Victoria – I can hear some of the music from cars passing my house even with double glazing that usually makes the cars glide by with no sound at all.

  • Like the idea of the music fine. Too many people are driving around with loud music and I can hear it while I’m in my house and my windows are closed. They wouldn’t be able to hear if an ambulance or police car were trying to get past.

  • No idea you could be fined must make sure I’m not rocking to hard!!

  • Wow, I did not know that. But it does make sense!

  • By the same logic of noise pollution, do the laws also apply for loud cars and motorcycle?

  • Too loud is not good and distractable, but a fine for having your windows down more then 5cm when parked or not locking your car doors goes too far for me. There could be moments that you just forget.

  • I thought this was pretty standard and sensible too – loud music is a distraction when driving.
