Hello!

Two super-popular Ikea furnishings have been urgently recalled. There are fears that the items are dangerous as they could collapse and cause injury.

The ACCC has issued a warning to those customers who have bought the Ikea HEMNES bookcase and glass-door cabinet shelves between April 2010 to April 2017, online or in-store.

It has been reported that this furniture could shrink and move in a dry indoor climate. This could result in the shelves and cabinets falling and causing injury.

Ikea has received the “occasional” report from Europe and North America about the shelves on these items shrinking or moving during the winter.

The recall notice said: “The HEMNES bookcases and glass-door cabinets are made of solid wood, designed to last and keep their place in the home of Ikea customers for a long time.”

  • Every book case or draws I bought I’ve always mounted then to a wall just to ensure they don’t fall

    • That’s indeed the best thing to do when possible (hard when you rent though).

  • Great share, thank you. I think this kind of information is always important. Whilst I don’t own these, I think it’s good to be aware.

  • Thanks for the information, my IKEA book case is from forever ago, so they normally do last

  • It’s strange that they ‘shrink’. I’ve heard of flat pack furniture swelling, but never shrinking.

  • Thankfully I don’t own these. But I love ikea!
