Mum turns to internet for advice after her husband tells her she smells different during pregnancy.

The mum shared on the forum Netmums, “Hi all, I’m 12 weeks pregnant and wanted to ask a weird question.

“My husband has told me I smell different. When I ask where, he says everywhere!

“My skin, my hair, my breath, and when we were having sex, he said I smell (and taste!) different.

“He won’t tell me if it’s a good or bad smell but just says it’s different.

“None of my personal hygiene habits have declined so I’m assuming it’s hormones?

“He used to tell me I smelt different on my periods as well, so he must have an amazing sense of smell!

“I shower each morning but don’t tend to have a second shower at night unless I’m on my period or feeling grubby or we are having oral sex.

“But now I’m going to start taking a bedtime shower as well!

“I’m worried now in case other people can smell it on me and if it’s an offensive smell! And what’s causing it, and whether it’s going to last throughout the pregnancy.

“Anyone else had this issue?? And did your partner ever say whether it was a good or bad smell?”

Many users responded that they also noticed a similar thing themselves during pregnancy.

Common side affect of pregnancy

During pregnancy a woman produces more sweat than usual and even more blood supply.

“Your whole aura changes when you’re pregnant, and that includes your personal aroma,” explains Miriam Greene, M.D., clinical assistant professor of obstetrics and gynecology at New York University Langone Medical Center.

“As your basal metabolic rate increases, so does blood supply to the armpits, vagina—everywhere.”

The enhanced blood supply means your vagina’s pH balance is altered. This can mean your lady parts have a “sweet, doughy, or gluey scent.” Totally normal, but it still might make you feel a little off.

Even your breasts will smell different! During the third trimester of pregnancy, it is not at all abnormal to become aware of a specific smell coming from your boobs. In fact, it’s usually a sign that your breasts are getting ready to produce breast milk.

  • Your husband must be very in tune with scents.

  • I don’t have a great sense of smell, but I do know that certain medications will make me smell different. I just hope no one else can smell me or finds it offensive if they do.

  • Yes – but it’s different, not bad.

  • No, I don’t remember anything like that.

  • Wow, I never noticed a difference. And I had such a strong sense of smell that everything made me throw up! This is the first time I have ever heard this, but interesting.

  • Never noticed a difference and neither did my husband or family. Perhaps this is the way the partner gets out of doing things in their household.

  • I never noticed any difference and no-one ever told me they noticed anything either. Maybe he just has a very keen sense of smell like a bloodhound

  • Smelling different isn’t necessarily a bad thing!

  • Your body has extra hormones streaming through your system when pregnant so yeah to someone who gets intimate with you such as yr hubby you can smell different. I had a friend whose husband hated it when she was not on the pill because she smelled & tasted different during oral sex.

  • I had a similar experience too. It was embarrassing but I think only my husband noticed a difference. I really wouldn’t worry.

  • common side effect – same as pregnant women smell things differently.

  • Never experienced it but maybe other people could smell but no one said anything. Doesn’t sound like a bad smell though so I wouldn’t be too worried.

  • Not strange I think.
