Prince Louis made his first royal debut at the Trooping the Colour and won the hearts of the nation by sweetly waving to the crowds on the balcony of Buckingham Palace.

Adorably, at the same time the 14-month-old revealed his very common “bad habit” – sucking his thumb.

Throughout the day, the Prince was seen slipping his thumb into his mouth including while looking out the window from inside the palace with his two siblings, Prince George, five, and Princess Charlotte, four.

But when Louis started sucking his thumb during his balcony debut, the Duchess of Cambridge’s mum reflex kicked in and she gently stepped in to try and stop him.

When husband Prince William was holding Louis, he attempted to remove his son’s thumb gently, but spotting the interaction, the mum-of-three smoothly approached Louis with a smile and effortlessly eased his thumb out of his mouth.

Little Louis then went on to continue his charm offensive by clapping and waving to the crowds.

Do you have a thumb sucker? How did you best deal with it?

  • Thankfully nope. My son’s been okay.

  • My older daughter, middle child, sucked her fingers when she was younger due to anxiety from not being able to see me as much as her father wouldn’t let me (lied to me). He used to smack her for it. It was awful. I knew that explaining to her that it could stuff up her teeth and letting her get out of the habit herself would happen which it did. I didn’t punish her in any way, it wasn’t her choice.

  • I don’t see it as a huge problem but probably should be discouraged sooner rather than later.

  • Mine never were but i dont see a problem with it. Its a safety/comfort thing for most children and they do grow out of it eventually.

  • Neither of mine sucked their thumbs but they both left their tongues hanging out

  • My eldest sucked to fingers till she was in Kindy

  • It is a habit that should fade in time.

  • No thumb suckers here, but if we did, time would be the answer they’d grow out of it.

  • I’m hoping my daughter gives it up herself

  • Bitter ales on the thumb usually stops it as it definitely doesn’t taste nice. Hard for the Royals – they would be castigated even more if Louis had a dummy in his mouth.

    • Should read bitter aloes – pity that the predictive text takes over at times.

  • that’s why I liked my kid having a dummy, you can throw it out but you can’t throw a thumb out

    • Yes, you can cut a piece off it then tell your child it is broken.

  • We just left them – they grew out of it.

  • It’s almost impossible to stop thumb sucking. I gave both of mine dummies so they wouldn’t suck their thumbs.
