Radio station pulls Michael Jackson songs due to Leaving Neverland documentary.

Local radio network Nova Entertainment Group has joined international networks in pulling Michael Jackson songs from its playlists, in the wake of renewed sexual abuse allegations against the late singer featured in the documentary Leaving Neverland.

“The decisions we make about the music we play on any of our stations are dependent on the relevance to the audience and the current context,” said Paul Jackson, Nova Entertainment’s Group Programme Director.

“In light of what is happening at the moment, smoothfm is not currently playing any Michael Jackson songs.”

Earlier this week, New Zealand’s two major radio networks NZME and Mediaworks stated they had pulled Jackson’s songs from airplay, at least temporarily, in light of the documentary, shares SMH.

Similar decisions have been made by radio broadcasters in Canada and Holland.

“I don’t think people can listen to the songs the same way anymore. They are supposed to make you happy, make you sing and dance,” editor of Dutch station NH Arjan Snijders explained in a Tuesday broadcast, Reuters reported.

Leaving Neverland – which features two men, including Australian choreographer Wade Robson, detailing explicit allegations of sexual abuse against the singer when they were children – has spectacularly re-cast Jackson’s legacy since its premiere at Sundance in January.

The documentary was this week televised in the US and UK; it will air in Australia on Friday and Saturday night on Network Ten.

Do you think it was a wise decision to pull his music off air?

  • I think it’s important they have the freedom to make these decisions people can decide what radio stations they listen to.

  • I find it a very strange decision. If he was still alive it would be different, bu like this.. No, I don’t understand it much.

  • Radio stations choose their playlists according to their demographic and their wishes.

  • No leave his music On the radio

  • Why can’t people let him rest in peace? The documentary information may not be true. The Media can edit and information ends up out of context.

  • I think this is a real shame. Whether he is guilty or not that doesn’t change the wonderful music he made.

  • They are doing it through public request l believe!

    • It also seems to be occurring in other countries too – stated in article.

  • I don’t agree with not playing his music. The people in the doco had both sworn under oath in court that nothing had happened. If it was true why would you not come forward so the person can be charged whilst they are alive?

  • THE songs were amazing and unique

  • No, I don’t agree with it. Why now? These allegations were made over 10 years ago, none of them were ever proven. Now there’s a tv show about it and all of a sudden they want to ban his music. What purpose will that serve? They’re still allegations that have not been proven and now Michael is no longer here to defend himself. You can’t change the fact he was a brilliant singer, dancer, song writer. His music will live on, no matter what!
