I grew up eating canned asparagus rather than fresh, and there is something comforting about the mushy texture and slightly pickled flavour. Great to have on hand for potato salad or omelette.
Took my time one day whilst grocery shopping and scanning the canned vegetables, and spotted this one. I thought, why not! Normally I buy fresh Asparagus Spears, but was willing to give this can a try. Was rather impressed, it still had a lot of flavour, went well in the dish. I’d be happy to keep a can or two on hand.
We have long been buyers of this product and have noticed that over the last 12 months that the taste has deteriorated. Just opened a can for lunch and find that it is almost flavourless! Our yardstick for retail purchases has always been Australian products first and if this is not possible, Australian owned. Of course quality can overrule this preference on occasions. We kept with Edgell because even though the product came from Peru we thought it was an Australian company. Just discovered that you are not! As there is no Australian content in any asparagus on our supermarket shelves I guess its open choice for us. So it will be on taste alone. If we cannot better the taste of your product It will be fresh asparagus only. Please do not include us in your rewards program.
Edgell Asparagus Spears have been gracing Aussie tables for many years and they are a great addition to sandwiches and salads. They are definitely a lot softer/soggier than the freshly cooked ones but there is definitely a comfort-food vibe about them. My only gripe with these is that they are quite expensive.
I grew up on these suckers – and still love them. Great in vol au vants, and omelettes, and I love making them into a dip with greek yoghurt, or serving them with steak, the mooshyness of them makes them so yummy to eat!
Found these Edgell Asparagus Spears to be soggy and not very nice. The spears were not easy to cook and didn’t taste anywhere as good as fresh asparagus
The biggest problem I have with this particular product is that it’s not alway consistent with the quality and the asparagus taste and texture just isn’t nice to consume. It is a great addition to cooking and salads
