Chowder is traditionally with a thicker consistency, and mainly potatoes in it.
I was told it never has tomato in a Chowder, and in the olden days people used milk, cream or crackers to thicken the soup too.
I haven’t seen it in Oz but it’s a pretty common soup in the USA and I had quite a bit over there when I visited my family.
