Fairly simple, quick, but oh so impressive! Donuts that aren’t oily and can be whipped up in half an hour. Gaze at your home made galaxy!

Ingredients (serves 12)

  • 1 cup Plain Flour, sifted
  • 1/2 cup Brown Sugar
  • 3/4 tsp Baking Powder
  • 1/4 tsp Bi Carb Soda
  • 1 Egg
  • 125ml Milk
  • 1/2 pinch Salt
  • 1 tsp Vanilla essence
  • 1 tbsp Butter, melted
  • 2 cups Icing Sugar, sifted
  • 2 tbsp Butter, melted
  • 1 tsp Vanilla Essence
  • 4-6 tbsp Milk
  • 2 Food colourings of choice
  • 2 tbsp Cachous, crushed
  • 1 tsp Gold coloured edible dust

Method

  1. Preheat oven to 180deg. Grease a donut tray or muffin tray.
  2. Place first 9 ingredients in a bowl and mix until just combined.
  3. Fill trays with mix and bake 15 minutes, or until golden and risen.
  4. While donuts are baking, prepare the icing. Combine all remaining ingredients except food coloring and mix well. Add milk slowly and use discretion to ensure you have a semi thick icing. Separate mix into 3 portions, colour two of them. When donuts are nearly done, microwave each bowl around 10 seconds or until quite funny. Add two coloured bowls of icing to uncoloured white icing, and stir a small amount to swirl colours.
  5. Remove donuts from tray, and while still hot, dip into icing, being sure to cover well. Sprinkle immediately with crushed cachous or dust with gold coloured dust. Allow icing to set before serving.

I always thought this would be so much harder to make (the icing that is) and thought they were done with oil based food colourings. Good to know it’s so much simpler. Will definitely be trying this out.
