A US restaurant is causing a stir over their sign with a set of strict rules for customers with children.

Old Fisherman’s Grotto, a restaurant in Monterey, California, has become famous for a sign that reads “No strollers, no high chairs and no booster seats”,  WRCB TV reports.

Below the list of rules is a blurb that says, “children crying or making loud noises are a distraction to other diners and as such are not allowed in the dining room”.

The rules have been in place since 2011 but have recently started drawing attention again after the sign was posted on Yelp.

The restaurant defended their rules and said they wouldn’t apologise for it.

They said people without children, or those who enjoy child-free dining are all about it.

  • 100% acceptable. If it offends you then dont go there. But people who want to go out for a romantic dinner deserve to be able to go to places where they can have a conversation without having to deal with other peoples kids.

  • Hard as it is to face, people have a right to child free activities, especially when the are childless themselves. Theres lots of other options for families

  • It’s their choice and since the sign has been there for so long, people must be okay with it. If you were on a romantic date you wouldn’t want to be distracted. I don’t think this is wrong. It’s better than being told to leave before you’ve had a chance to eat. That would be very embarrassing. Just don’t go to that restaurant.

  • I think this is wrong. It is putting all parents and children into the same basket. I have taken my kids to fine dining establishments before and have often been told about how well behaved they are. There are many parents who would be raising well behaved and respectful children and it is nice to be able to go somewhere nice as a family to celebrate things such as birthdays- I want my kids to be with me. I find this sign quite offensive as it is implying that all children are noisy hooligans who are going to cause a ruckus for other diners.

  • I think it’s okay. Obviously, it’s not somewhere you’d want to dine as a family, but would be comfortable on a date night. As a parent, dining out with kids can be a nightmare so you tend to choose family-friendly dining until your children are old enough for other dining.

  • If I was going out for tea with no kids, sometimes I would prefer not to be disturbed by them, but only those that are really loud yelling and screaming and running around while the parents don’t care

  • So it’s an adults only restaurant I won’t be taking my kids there for sure

  • I think as long as they’re clear upfront, it’s their right.

  • Maybe they should just make their restaurant adults only? I prefer children who dine respectfully but if kids are welcome then they do make noise, that’s being a kid.

  • I think it’s fair enough. I wouldn’t take my four kids to a ‘non-noisy’ restaurant where I wouldn’t be able to enjoy my meal because I would conscious of them making to much noise. If I take them out, it’s to a family restaurant that is already noisy!

  • I think a restaurant can certainly have a certain target audience and it should be ok when they state this clearly. It wouldn’t be my choice of restaurant either as I like to include my kids when I go out.

  • Not a restaurant I would go to – any restaurant that excludes any group or is not inclusive is not for me!

    • I have found tables with loud raucous adults to be more distracting than children learning how to eat out with their parents!

  • Not all restaurants are for kids, as long as it is clearly stated that kids aren’t allowed.

  • This is fine as long as it’s clearly outside and advised of when you book and on their website. Parents will go to another restaurant when they have kids with them. Every restaurant is not for everyone.

  • I remember that even Jamie Oliver has banned strollers from some of his restaurants.
