TODDLER fighting for lifer after he was struck by a car when he escaped from his family’s home onto a busy road.

The two-year-old boy was struck down on Railway Ave, Laverton at 8.45pm.

The boy’s family, who realised the child was missing from a nearby home, were attempting to catch up with him when he ran out on to the road.

A Royal Children’s Hospital spokeswoman said the boy was in a serious but stable condition this morning.

The driver of the station wagon failed to stop and help the injured child, police say.

A 21-year-old man Laverton man was arrested at a home on Railway Avenue and is currently assisting police with their enquiries.

The child remains in hospital in a critical condition.

  • Can you really hit a child and not realise? How could you not stop? I guess people panic. My child running into traffic is a fear of mine

  • Oh my god, how horrible. And the driver didn’t even have the decency to stop! Makes me feel sick

  • Best of luck, and my sympathy to the parents.

  • I don’t know the circumstances under which the toddler escaped. Even with a security door that locks without a key, the handles are lower than they are on old houses built many years ago. A tall 2 year old can possibly manage to open the door if they stand on tippy toes. When I moved house in 2012 my nephew couldn’t reach to open my front door at my old house but could easily reach the handle of my newly built one.

  • Kids can be so quick and running out onto a road is a scary thing. I hope he makes a full recovery.

  • Aw how sad is this ! It can happen at any time, kids can be so quick !!

  • Why the hell didn’t he stop to render aid, check if he was okay or call 000. I understand he was probably scared but everyone knows you don’t take off if you hit someone. Hope the little man is okay. Kids being kids, this is one of those things that any parent with an escape artist (like myself) is always wary of.
