Uk department store has come under fire for a sign in one of its stores advertising ‘girls toys’ which many people are calling ‘sexist’

Shoppers have accused Tesco of ‘sexism’ after spotting an aisle in an East Sussex store labelled for girls’ toys.

An image of a sign from the Tesco store was shared on social media by a customer named Rob Lowe last week.

Mr Lowe argued that the sign wasn’t “really acceptable anymore” and he felt it set a poor example for his young daughter, who loves unicorns and dolls but also enjoys playing with dinosaurs.

He wrote: “Come on Tesco. This isn’t really acceptable anymore. My daughter loves unicorns and dolls. She ALSO loves robots, dinosaurs, rockets, monsters and Lego. Don’t make me have to reassure her that this is ok.”

Tesco agreed the signs were no longer appropriate and would change them as soon as possible.

  • Too much outrage. So they only needed to write ‘Toys’, but I don’t get all this having to not say things, not imply thing not write things because it might offend some sort of gender neutral preference.

  • It’s great that the shop has agreed and will be changing their signs :)

  • In this day and age that sign is inapropriate. “Toys” sign is all they need.

  • Unnecessary sign toys is all that’s needed. While people keep commenting it doesn’t matter kids do notice and that’s a girl toy or that’s a boys toy could incite bullying.

  • I dont find it a big deal people can buy any toy their kids like

  • I think people are becoming way too sensitive over these types of issues. I’ve always been a tom boy and I’m not offended at all.

  • I think it’s a bit over the top to put a store under fire because of a phrase like this; we know what the store meant when they put up this sign. BTW I agree that the toy section doesn’t need an indication of gender.

    • I disagree. We all know what racist terms mean and we dont use them, so why are sexist terms OK?

  • Toys are just toys! No gender required!

  • It doesn’t really matter though. It’s not a moor problem.

  • I played with my brother’s cars and trucks almost as much as he did during school holidays.
He played with my dolls and a lot of other toys a lot too. I have a girl that plays with her cars just about as much as her doll…..except we have to stay quite while baby goes to sleep. All sorts of toys go in the pram with her.

  • I don’t look for a gender specific toy aisle I just look for the toy section, my boys love every type of toy, from prams and babies to trucks and sand pits. People need to be less outraged and focus on their kid’s happiness

  • I think kids do notice this sort of thing – jst have a toy section.

  • I’ll shop for toys in the “boy” section for my girl and toys in the “girl” section for my boy if that’s what they want! Since when did the words boy and girl become so offensive?
My boy asked Santa for a hair tie for Xmas so he is getting a whole set of hair ties, hair clips and a bracelet.
Who cares what the signs say, it’s not an issue till u make it one!

    • You have totally missed the point. Nobody said the words girl or boy were offensive. That doesnt mean its acceptable to tell kids what toys they are ‘allowed’ to play with based on their gender.

  • I really don’t know who all these people who get easily offended at every single little thing are but they need to just relax! I see that sign and I don’t think it’s sexist or the boys aren’t allowed to play with those toys, I just think that it is a sign pointing to where I would find dolls etc. I don’t find this sexist or offensive at all

    • Having an opinion isnt the same as being offended, but YES it does matter. A lot. Limiting how children are taught they are allowed to play limits how they are taught to behave. It teaches women that science and medicine are ‘for boys’ and teaches men that childcare is ‘for girls’. Can you not see how thats not OK?

  • Lucky kids pay no attention to signs. They could be blindfolded and still find the toy section.

    • Lol! So very true – kids do instinctively know how to locate the toy aisle!

      • hehe very true! they are masters at this aren’t they!!
