A new Coles promotion targeting kids has faced criticism considering it was introduced just weeks after the supermarket’s nationwide single-use plastic bag ban.

The supermarket giant is offering customers miniature versions of everyday items on sale in store for every $30 they spend, which can be placed inside a plastic display package, shares yahoo 7.

Shoppers can collect 30 items in the “Little Shop” collectable campaign from July 18, including pocket-sized Vegemite jars, Colgate toothpaste tubes and boxes of Lipton tea bags.

Some customers loved the idea of the promotion while others slammed the supermarket over its continued use of plastic in the wake of their ban on single-use plastic bags.

We LOVE It!

We’re putting it out there though. Despite all the haters, we LOVE this idea and we know our kids will have so much fun collecting these miniatures. Please Coles, do not bow to the insane pressure and remove this promotion before it’s even gathered momentum. We support you!

People (Once Again) Are Losing It

“It’s ridiculous, especially given the environmental impact,” one Facebook user wrote on the Coles page.

“Have you seen the amount of plastic and other material that is just going to waste! How long will people collect this crap for before it goes either into landfill or into the ocean?” another asked.

“If either Coles or Woolworths actually cared one iota for the environment they would not try and one up each other marketing such prolific and damaging waste.”

Others labelled the marketing push as “clueless” and wished it would be a “sensational failure”.

Coles has insisted the plastics involved in the new initiative are fully recyclable, including its packaging.

One person has even started a petition to prevent the promo!

Love them or hate them?

  • I collected them for a friend in the US. Her kids loved them and used them with their dolls.

  • I didn’t love or hate them. I thought they were a bit of fun but I didn’t obsess about collecting them. The kids liked them

  • I wonder if the companies who own the brands promoted on the toys are paying advertising fees. I’ll be surprised if they aren’t.

  • I got some today. They are so cute but sooooo small. The thing I hate is having to collect them all but not able to pick and choose which ones I need. Makes it hard to collect all. Just a huge marketing ploy to get us to shop more. Can’t blame Coles if it works.

  • This is a great idea if you have small children but why would you need the box to display them in. Wouldn’t you get the item and give it to your child to put in their kitchen?

  • Yet another storm in a teacup – hope there is also a petition to stop all plastic toys at the same time. Sure they cause just as much pollution – especially as they get thrown away so quickly – this collection is very liable to remain as a collection for many years.

  • I love them. Think it is a clever marketing plan by brandnames to have mini products. Just another toy – hope we aren’t going to ban plastic toys now. Anyway could be made from recyclable plastic. If you don’t want it don’t get it when offered.

  • People need to calm down, no one is making you take them, if you don’t want it don’t take it, simple really. Then there are those who are winging about the impact on the environment and that they’ll just throw them in the garbage anyway, what! That is the most ridiculous thing I’ve ever heard! We have three people in this household who would love them and gladly collect them, thank you Coles, for such a fun idea.

  • I have no problem with this promo and these items could become part of a great little play kit. Some people will like and some people will dislike. If you like buy and if you don’t then move on.

    • Like MoM – I love this promo too ! It ultimately comes down to choice and everyone is allowed free choice in what they like/dislike. No one needs to be shamed for liking the promo.

  • Shame on MOM for saying they like this promotion, big brands getting in the minds of children, disgusting marketing. Considering most of the products are unhealthy too.

  • My first reaction to this promotion was how the big brands are getting free advertising and pushing their products on to children, we should not allow marketing to children like this! I am disgusted that it has been allowed. I signed the petition for this reason mainly. If they are truly recycleable which I hope they are then they should all go in the recycle now. What happened to generic labels for kids shopping toys? And I question the size of them for some toddlers may think they can eat them,, will they be a choking hazard?

  • Oh dear Lord, get over yourselves people! I bet those that complain are more than happy to go out and buy plastic toys for there kids elsewhere. Toys that when broken get thrown out because they aren’t recyclable.

  • Seriously people, relax! Are you going to boycott every single toy o

    • Toy that contains plastic** it’s just for fun and a nice freebie to get whilst shopping. If you don’t like it or against it, don’t take it. Let the rest of us enjoy the fun and cuteness of it*

  • I am indifferent regarding this, cheers.

  • THese toys would cost far more than a plastic bag to produce so I dont really see the logic here. THey should do a choice to keep everyone happy – You either get a bag or one of these toys.
