My eldest was about two weeks away from cut of age for school. As she was quite smart the preschool suggested we start her. So we did she was one of the youngest in her class. However she did really well in all areas. Until she got to yr 4. Then as hormones start in some girls n kids seemed to change as she was almost a year younger than most in class she started to struggle socially. We ended up repeating her and teachers giving her extra work to keep her interested. Best thing we did she is now doing really well at school socially. Wish we had waited that extra year in the beginning.

  • It is very much an individual choice for the family and child.

  • This is really good to know. Is not all about study as you also need to ensure they can mix with the group well.

  • I was 4 when I started year 1 many moons ago and back when they had school nurses so was also found to be 100 percent deaf but had taught my self to lip read. Many ops and I have artificial ear drums. I always felt I had to work twice as hard as the rest in the class but I got there I am so glad you had this choice for your little one so they do not have to struggle to cope with school. These choices were not given to me. I hope you child now can enjoy school to it’s full advantage :)

  • My kids started school when they were four and a half years old. Surprisingly, they did very well considering they were younger than their peers. I think that the personality of the child plays a big role in adapting to school life. When they finished high school, they faced some problems with not being old enough to go out and have a drink but they soon overcame this.

  • We did the same thing sending our daughter at 4.5. She is in year 6 now and it is very apparent that she is a year younger than most of her class mates. Academically, she is doing fine but she is somewhat naïve compared to a few of her class mates.
