An Australian supermarket has banned staff from handing out smiley fritz to children over ‘slip hazard’ fears.

Foodland’s store in South Australia’s Barossa Valley placed a sign on its meat display counter this week, telling customers the enduring tradition was over, shared Daily Mail.

‘Due to slip hazards, we are no longer able to give out any smiley fritz to children,’ the sign read.

The store said the ban was in place because a customer bumped her head after slipping on a fritz piece a child had dropped on January 3, The Advertiser reported.

The woman was not injured and didn’t require medical treatment.

A Labor member of South Australian parliament, took to Facebook to label the move ‘ridiculous’.

‘First it was the Bunnings snag on onion saga – now Foodland has put a frown on smiley fritz banning its gifting to small children due to ”slip hazards”,’ she wrote. ‘All jokes aside… I think it’s ridiculous.’

Foodland’s head office was not involved in the decision, but respected the store’s right to make it, it is understood.

Some locals have argued against the decision saying:

‘I would imagine 99.9 per cent of South Aussies have a childhood memory of getting fritz at a supermarket,’ he said.

‘It’s worse than the onion saga at Bunnings.’

Another told Seven News: ‘It’s something that children grew up with years ago, going to the deli and getting their free smiley fritz, but it’s no longer. It’s sad.’

  • Thats a silly excuse.
Might have to pagkage all grapes as well as I often see stray grapes on the floor that could be slip hazzards.

  • I think people should just watch where they walk. Anyway, I think Smiley Fritz isn’t very healthy so best not eat him anyway!

  • One slip, maybe people should be more observant with their surroundings.

  • I’ve slipped on floors with nothing on them. Maybe it was her shoes. I think it is silly.

  • You can’t blame the store for being careful once they have had an incident. Unfortunately people do sue and they need to cover themselves.

  • Awww how sad the minority wins out. I imagine there has been just this one incident and in this day and age of social media and scrutiny they’ve panicked. It’s a rite of passage for the deli person to give your child some meat. It’s a highlight of shopping with your children.

  • Watch out kids, soon you won’t be able to get a free piece of fruit from Woolworths just incase someone slips on a banana skin.

  • What a silly reason to ban this.

  • Sad that it’s come to this.

  • This is kind of a knee jerk reaction. There are so many things that ‘could’ be dangerous – yet it would be silly to try and ban them all.

  • Everything is getting banned these days ????

  • Well a free piece of fruit is a better alternative… thankfully no one has slepped on a banana peel yet.

  • If only people used common sense and picked up what they dropped instead of taking the attitude ‘someone else will do it for me’ then these ridiculous bans wouldn’t be brought in in the first place.
