Supermarket slammed over all the junk food promoted at the end of the shopping aisles.

“No wonder we have an obesity epidemic!!”

Jessica Lowe, who runs the Happy Healthy Nutrition Facebook page, said the deals on unhealthy food “frustrated” her.

“I can’t believe the crap that is put on all of the promotional ends!” wrote the nutritionist. “I use to work in retail sales so I know all about promo ends being where consumers shop from and so do the supermarkets, which is exactly why they put high profit items on ends without considering what they are promoting.”

She said she walked around the supermarket before capturing the 15-second video, and couldn’t find a single healthy item at the ends of aisles.

“This is why we have an obesity epidemic in Australia and the world!” she added.

“Seriously I know this is an over the top rant but the supermarket giants need to become a bit more ethical and stop thinking so much about profits- what is life without health!

“The reason these processed foods are on sale with 20% off, 25% or even 50% off is because the food is crap so even when the supermarkets knock the price down by 50% they still make huge profits! It’s not expensive to put processed crap in a box!”

Jessica added, “This is when the next generation can be brain washed and influenced by the supermarket giants and what is on offer without having a second thought!”

Do you get frustrated by the items promoted at the end of shopping aisles?

  • Nothing worse than a shopping trip with a million things you want to avoid but impossible I now shop without kids or online.

  • If you go round the whole supermarket, you’ll also find specials on fruits, veggies, meats, breads etc. If you choose to focus on the unhealthy, not good for you, we should all be aware of what we should and shouldn’t be eating. Junk food is ok as a sometimes food, so why not have them on special for those of us who have them as a treat?

  • They do it at Coles and Safeway and we will buy for a treat at a low price!

  • I love junk food, everything in moderation though, you don’t have to buy it if you don’t want too…

  • Absolutely, I agree. I’ve commented and noticed that there is a rotation of, for example, potato chips on sale for really cheap prices. One week it’s Smiths, the next week it’s another brand for $1.65 or $2. How can you resist when they’re that cheap? Then on the next aisle is the chocolate or lolly option – on rotation chocolate one week vs Allens lollies the next. I’ve commented to the cashier when she’s scanning all my junk food. Yes, I am the purchaser and in control of what I buy but when they’re in your face…!!! All in the name of persuasive marketing!

  • We are supposed to be in control of what we eat, and personally I don’t care what is on the ends of the aisles, I hardly ever look there. I am usually in the veg & fruit aisle myself.

  • Lately there is much more junk food promoted, I agree. Also on the weekly catalogues.

  • Well said Ellen and nealsq. You’ve said exactly what I wanted to say.

  • No I don’t get frustrated, just walk past it and don’t give it a glance. I think where there is a market, there is an offer. You can’t blame the supermarket playing with what people want, you can’t blame the supermarket for the obesity epidemic. People have their own responsibility in what they buy or don’t buy. I’m more interested in the health food isle. Would be nice if we would find more deals in the health food isle, but with or without deals, it’s what I’m interested in to buy.

  • Our supermarket still has nappies, toilet paper, shampoo etc on the promo ends yet I still buy the same brands I always have with no influence from them and it is the same with the junk items, I buy what I like and what is on my list. We can still be obese and eat healthy foods, we decide what we buy and what we eat and how much we eat
