Hello!

In an attempt to avoid ‘No jab, no play’ laws, anti-vaccine parents are using secret Facebook groups to start backyard daycare centres.

This has concerned many health authorities, given the amount of preventable diseases currently being circulated around the country. These centres could pose a major health risk for all of the children involved.

Sydney mother, Heidi Street, is one such mum. She has advertised for ‘expressions of interest’ for one of these backyard daycare centres on Vaccine Free Australia, a group with more than 5000 members.

“I would like to open a daycare in my home for 3-4 children, 2 days per week … I have 2 children … I have a strong passion for children’s health and wellbeing and have a beautiful nurturing soul,” she posted.

“Children’s days would be spent among nature, a walk to the beach, learning through play and games. Please let me know if this interests you.”

Supporters as far away as Adelaide responded to her post, some even suggesting they may also start these backyard daycare centres themselves.

  • ooohhh secret face book groups! What happens if one child gets some virus and spreads it to the other children? who would get the finger pointed at them?

  • This is a stupid and dangerous idea. Not responsible at all

  • they will have to join main stream school unless they are home schooled right the way through so I dont see the point at all. Also why would you put your child at high risk of contracting a terrible disease and possibly death when it is unavoidable?

  • This is a stupid and dangerous idea. I hope this doesn’t become a new trend

  • Think she would be looking at being sued once something goes wrong and it would because the whole herd hasn’t been vaccinated in the centre.

  • As far as it goes all this anti-vax stuff has been going on for too long. Maybe the government just needs to find another way to force idiots into protecting their kids.
As to backyard daycares, so long as they are through a scheme and subject to the normal checks so that the kids aren’t being put into anymore danger than they already are, I don’t have a problem with it. Keep all the disease carriers together so that they can infect each other and not the children of those who are trying to do the right things.

    • Oh, and did I mention that these ‘centres’ should be as far away from other children as possible? preferably in the desert where there is no one else around.

  • What an interesting business opportunity! I certainly wouldn’t send my child to one, but if it means keeping the anti-vaxxed kids together and away from others, not such a bad idea. She may look long-term to providing education options for the same kids who shouldn’t be allowed to attend mainstream schools.

  • I have no problem with that.

  • I’m a big adovocate for each to their own and not wanting to cast judgement about other mums or dads but I’m sorry I’m totally against this idea. Not only are these anti vaxxers putting their kids at risk, their putting other children at risk too, so no I’m really not in favour fir such childcare.

  • People with these ridiculous ideas were not alive to see the many deaths and life-long disabilities caused by diseases for which we now have vaccinations. Measles, from which my cousin died, I nearly died and my friend spent a long time in hospital. could damage sight, leave one open to pneumonia and later in life come back in the form of fatal meningitis. Chicken Pox could spread through the body and kill within a few hours. I also lost a friend this way. Polio caused paralysis in many parts of the body often requiring time in an iron lung if the lungs were affected, Friends would come back to school wearing calipers to assist them to stand and walk till their muscles developed again. Some suffered for the rest of their lives. Their were also many deaths from Polio which was the greatest fear in my Mother’s life. If I fell sick, her first thought was Polio – fortunately she was never right and I survived childhood. Our cemeteries are full of the graves of these lost infants and children. As Pauline said “Do your research” – go back 70 years and more and find out what life was like before Vaccination gave our babies a chance to grow up.

  • These mums who want to run their own day care in their homes have to come to terms that they themselves had been immunised in their childhood. Why subjecy their children to preventable diseasrs. Getting these diseases in later age are more dangerous. Have a heart and do not subject your children to unnecessary infections.

  • I think it is a great idea to have options for those who don’t want to inject their babies with mercury, formaldehyde and other nasty chemicals that are in vaccines. It is about time the vaccine makers get their act together and provide safe vaccinations then maybe the anti-vaxxers will have more confidence in vaccines. In America their is a huge movement of people and growing questioning the safety of vaccines, a documentary called Vaxxed is available for all to view online. Hopefully a un-biased debate will start in Australia so we can get the truth and not want the vaccine makers are putting out as propaganda to protect their incomes of billions of dollars. Honestly I can’t see how an unvaccinated child can spread disease if they don’t get sick first, it has never been proven that an unvaccinated baby or child has been the cause of a disease so why do people think this is the case. Read the facts not the fiction.

    • You can be a carrier for a disease without actually being symptomatic yourself. It’s what herd immunity is all about – preventing people from contracting it in the first place so they are not symptomatic themselves AND don’t become a carrier for other vulnerable children with less capable immune systems.

  • Very naive of her thinking she can operate a daycare facility from her home without going through the correct channels. She has no idea of what is needed to ensure the safety & well being of children in a care centre let alone the legal implications of doing it without being registered. I doubt anyone will want to pay full price for her daycare & no subsidies from the govt which is what backyard childcare will be, the govt will not pay the allowances to any of them until they vaccinate their kids. Nothing more than a babysitting service with no qualified early learning educators, no insurance will cover her because she is not licensed to care for other children.
It is very selfish of these people risking the lives of not only their children but so many others who are too young or genuinely unable to have the vaccinations & it is why we are seeing a return of these easily preventable diseases.
These non vaccinated children should not be allowed to attend school either because they spread diseases due to the fact they are infectious before the anyone realises they have measles or chicken pox etc. I made sure my kids were protected against as much as possible especially after 1 of mine contracted chickenpox (before vaccine for it was available.) I was due to give birth to my 2nd child at the same time he came out in spots so no one wanted to take him while I went to hospital. We also could not take him to hospital with us either because he could have given it to others.
It is very selfish & stupid to think that vaccines are dangerous, there is no proof of it & it does not cause autism. You are born with Autism, you don’t catch it!

  • sILLY, STUPID AND dangerous. This SYDNEY mum is not thinking of the wellbeing of any other children, even her own.. The health authorites have reason for grave concern. I WOULD NOT LIKE ONE OF THESE BACK YARD PLAY GROUPS IN MY BACK YARD. tHESE MUMS DO NOT UNDERSTAND THE RATIONALE OF HERD IMMUNIZATION.
