A three-year-old boy has been killed by a tractor on a property south of Hobart.

Police and paramedics were called to the Kettering property about 7.30pm on Thursday after the boy was tragically hit by a tractor driven by his dad.

“Our thoughts are with the boy’s family and loved ones at this difficult time,” Tasmania Police said in a statement.

Inspector David Wiss said on Friday “it was simply a collision”.

“The three-year-old boy was pronounced deceased at the scene,” he told reporters.

“Very sadly, the tractor was being driven by the father of the boy at the time of the incident.

“It is nothing but a tragic accident.”

The boy’s traumatised family have been assisting police to determine the exact circumstances of the accident, Insp Wiss said.

Officers are investigating the incident and are preparing a report for the coroner.

RIP little one. Our thoughts are with the family x

  • How tragic and heartbreaking, especially for the Dad who was driving the tractor. I wonder if he even knew his little boy was outside. My parents only found out my little brother could open our back door when he crept out very quietly and crawled in under our family car my Dad was working on. He almost put his full weight down on him as the motor had been taken out and Dad was about to climb into the engine baby. Had my little brother not spoken he wouldn’t have seen him in time. I hope the whole family left behind can grieve in privacy. The last thing they need is the media hanging around like vultures. Hopefully his family will have counselling for as long as they need it, could be months, could be a lot longer. Rest in peace little one

  • So hard when a parent or care giver does this. We were always warned never to go near the farm machinery as children and made sure my lot were never left alone near them too. This poor family it will be hard and so much guilt going around.
