A teacher’s message has gone viral after he let his student sleep in class.

Teachers spend so much time preparing lesson plans and trying to engage students in learning. Surely a child nodding off in the middle of class would get kicked out and sent to the office, right?

Well not in the case of high school English teacher Monte Syrie, who sees things very differently.

In a Twitter thread, he explained why he didn’t take it personally when his student Meg fell asleep.

“I think too often the biggest thing that people forget about high school students is that they are kids,” Syrie says. “They’re kids — kids who are having to grow up way too fast and are having way too much pressure put on them, in and out of school … even for our best and brightest, that pressure gets to be too much.”

  • It sounds like this kid has an awful lot on her plate.

  • Have the parents been made aware that their daughter is often too tired to stay awake in class?? They may not realise that they are expecting too much of their daughter. As a teacher I would also enquire if the child has a medical condition that she has to take medication for. Some can make you very tired (talking from experience). I never went to sleep in class but found it hard to concentrate sometimes.

  • This is beautiful and if all teachers cared enough to know what was happening in their students lives it would be amazing.

  • Obviously a very caring and understanding teacher, and the student must be a very responsible student to have done the essay at home that night as well as doing all the daily chores.

  • yes I think this is lovely, as parents we strive to give our kids all the experiences they want (or we missed out on!) so we sign them up for everything and fill their days and evenings with education and sports and arts and chores and way too much stuff!

I get it’s because we want them to be the best that they can be and we want them to have the world and the universe at their feet to do with as they wish, but really all they want to do is spend time with mum and dad, and family and friends and sometimes be couch potatoes and veg out with no responsibilities (just like us adults want sometimes!)

  • I hope the teachers of my children’s classes let them sleep too when they doze off ! Honestly our children can get very tired, have a sickness coming up, have a lot on their mind, feelings, emotions, problems, fears and a bit of compassion of teachers goes a long way

  • A teacher with a holistic approach towards a child is wonderful.
It takes empathy and skill to approach this situation in this manner.

  • This is an amzing teacher who knows their students well. Imsure the same would not yave been offered if the student fell asleep because they were up gaming all night.

  • The compassion and empathy shown by this teacher gives me hope there are still amazing people out there taking care and educating our future.

  • This teacher is looking at the ‘big picture’ rather than sweating the small stuff. Something we can all do.

  • Meg has an amazing teacher and seems to be an amazing child which will bloom into a highly functional adult. I hope she gets a break.

  • Wow, huge write up! You must be really tired to fall asleep in class, something I could never do

  • I’m sure she doesn’t do this every day so it was a very fair way to deal with the situation. Not many teens would want to fall asleep in class due to embarrassment so she must have been very tired.
