A schoolgirl has tragically died after posting a poll on Instagram that resulted in her taking her own life.

Davia Emilia, 16, reportedly jumped three floors to her death at her home in Sarawak, eastern Malaysia on Monday.

Police have said the cause of her sudden and shocking death was a question she posted on social media before she died — asking if she should.

According to local media, the teenager posted the disturbing poll question along with the caption: “Really Important, Help Me Choose D/L”, The Sun reports.

Police in Sarawak said Davia, described as “studious” by neighbours, died by suicide after 69 per cent of poll respondents voted she should die.

Her death has prompted the country’s Youth and Sports Minister Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman to call for national-level discussions on mental health.

He said: “I am genuinely worried about the state of our youth’s mental health. It’s a national issue which must be taken seriously.”

Ramkarpal Singh, a lawyer and Malaysian MP, has suggested those who voted for Davia to die could be found guilty of abetting suicide.

He said: “Would the girl still be alive today if the majority of ‘netizens’ on her Instagram account discouraged her from taking her own life?

“Would she have heeded the advice of ‘netizens’ to seek professional help had they done so?

“Did the encouragement of those ‘netizens’ actually influence her decision to take her own life?

“Since attempted suicide is an offence in this country, it follows that abetting one to attempt suicide may be, too.”

  • Most likely voted yes as a joke?

  • Why on earth would u vote yes?
Poor girl too young too soon

  • I wonder if those who voted yes thought she was joking. I sure hope they were and that they feel terrible now. I wish this lovely young lady had been able to get help instead of feeling like she had no way out. R.I.P.

  • This is so sad and I really feel for her that she couldn’t get the help she needed before it was too late. To all the people saying she should kill herself they need to get into some sort of trouble. Who tells that to someone who is clearly emotionally unstable and crying out for help? My first instinct would be to reach out to them not the opposite. RIP

  • How tragic. More education is needed to stop this sort of thing happening and people voting should be accountable there is no reason to vote someone should die.

  • I dont understand why people based their important decisions on other peoples suggestions, and those who suggested her to die what were they thinking of, how anyone can suggest someone else you never know or met to die? Internet and social media should not be used for such activities.

  • Holy crap. Imagine voting that somebody should die! What is wrong with people. Obviously she needed somebody to help her!

  • But did these voters (that I expect them to be her “friends”) understand that she was serious? Did they think it was a joke? Did nobody try to contact her to find out what was happening, alert the parents or someone else?
So sad that she put her life in the hands of a group of people that clearly didn’t care about her. Such a young girl gone.. :-(

  • I’m not sure what’s worse, that she felt the need to post a poll about suicide or that majority of the responders voted yes, she should die.

  • Very disturbing that 69% voted she should die/wished her death ! What is wrong with people !!
The state of the mental health of our youth is concerning indeed.

  • How incredibly sad. I can’t believe anyone was cruel enough to vote for death.

    • Tragic and sad and lack of empathy and not being reached out too is sickening.

  • Sadly Mental Health has become a huge issue for people of all ages – mainly school age plus adults. There is so many types of depression too. Some people manage to hide it from others. Unfortunately A Dr. cannot mention it if /she hears about it from a relative and not from the patient. They have to wait for a patient to comment or a Dr. to notice it via something a patients says. It can make it very difficult to get help for somebody who needs it.

  • Very tragic that online opinions mattered so greatly for her to do this
