Spring School Holidays are here….and with Christmas only weeks away, the festive spirit is already in the air. The weather is getting warmer and we can start peeling off the layers.

There is so much to do these school holidays. These are just a few of the highlights of school holiday fun per state. It certainly is NOT an exhaustive list – it’s rather activities that have caught my eye that I would love to take my kids to

NSW

‘Slimed’ at Sea Life Sydney Aquarium

These September school holidays, up the slime factor as part of Sea Life Sydney Aquarium’s all-new ‘Slimed’ interactive experience. In an attraction-first, guests will go on a slime-tastic underwater journey as they learn weird and wonderful facts about the slimy creatures of the sea including anemones, sea cucumbers, moray eels and ‘the most disgusting creature on earth’, the hagfish. For the daring, try your hand at ‘Black Box Challenges’ where guests can stick their hands in a mystery black box and guess what slimy creature the texture resembles!

For the creative, there will be daily slime-making workshops at 11:00am and 2.30pm where guests learn how to create their own slime at Darwin’s Lab (located between Shipwreck and Jurassic Seas).

Make like a slippery eel and ‘slime’ on in before the experience slips away on Sunday 14 October.

MEGA CREATURES At Hunter Valley Gardens

Venture into the Hunter Valley Gardens these school holidays and discover a spectacular display of giants that will thrill both parents and children alike! From 29 September  to 14 October, the  annual Mega Creatures event returns to Hunter Valley Gardens showcasing some of Australia’s largest animatronic bugs, dinosaurs and dragons. Get up close and personal with our infamous 8 metre T-rex, a giant Triceratops, the towering tarantula, a mega-sized snail and much more. Plus, see the new kids on the block – baby dinosaurs have arrived in the Gardens!

Kids of all ages will be delighted (or possibly terrified!) as they experience life-like sounds and movements of these giant dinosaurs, dragons and creepy crawlies. They may even learn a thing or two about our prehistoric friends.

Marvel Create Your Own – Comic Workshops

In partnership with Tap Tap comics, Microsoft Store are hosting comic workshops for you to learn and get creative these school holidays.

Join us in-store with well-renowned Marvel comics artists, Patrick Brown and Sheldon Vella as they teach you how to illustrate famous Marvel characters. Watch on and learn different techniques and tips from the professionals in a step by step tutorial. You will also have the chance to get hands on with Surface to create, edit and share your very own comic art using the Marvel Create Your Own platform. Using your favorite Marvel characters, you can create new panels and write speech bubbles to craft an exciting Marvel comic adventure, created by you!

New Endurance Course for Kids & Grown-Ups At Sky Zone

Sky Zone has launched the ultimate endurance course at their state-of-the-art venue in Sydney, Alexandria. Aspiring Warriors from the age of 5 can climb, weave and swing their way around the course, challenging themselves and each other to come out on top.

Superhero Academy at Madame Tussauds Sydney

Calling all budding superheroes! These school holidays, Madame Tussauds Sydney is calling guests to come one and come all, to join their Superhero Academy and be a FORCE FOR GOOD!

For a gold coin donation, mini heroes can fly into fun craft activities at the Darling Harbour attraction and design their very own cape to help them take on the world! All proceeds raised will go to Merlin’s Magic Wand, a charity which provides magical experiences to ill disabled and disadvantaged children around the world.

Dressed in their new superhero gear, guests can also join the mission to save the world alongside Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman and The Flash at the new Justice League: A Call for Heroes experience, an interactive adventure unlike any other.

Lost Picnic

Bohemian outdoor music festival, Lost Picnic, is the perfect family day out these Spring school holidays. Festival organisers have forayed into the world of theatre and art to bring on board a myriad of entertainment and performances to keep the young ones entertained, with the likes of La Petite Grande, The Nylon Zoo, Fizzics Science, Circus Playground joining the impressive food and music line-up.

Alongside the city’s best food vendors, Lost Picnic will feature a proudly antipodean music line up including Tash Sultana, Meg Mac, Marlon Williams, Odette, Sons of the East, Big Words and Hot Potato Band.

La Petite Grande, a 1920s art-deco inspired tent with a mirrored façade, is part song and dance, part circus. Run by the outrageously talented Kiki and Pascal, each show is mixture of interactive and inspiring antics designed to keep children laughing all afternoon.

Two jumping castles will be available for kids to jump themselves silly all day. It is free to jump with sessions for bigger children and smaller children held separately, so there is a chance for everyone to enjoy.

Little ones can try their hand at plate spinning, master the diablo (the juggling hourglass) or even create lit up artworks with a poi with Circus Playground.

There is a giant art and crafts workshop for budding artists of all ages can contribute to a huge art installation.

Lost Picnic have brought back their popular lawn games for the day – totem tennis, boules, tug of war, giant Jenga and giant connect four.

There will also be a myriad of roving performances like the Blue Tongue Brass, Gramophone Man and Morris Dancers to keep guests of all ages entertained in between music sets.

Lost Picnic is on at Sydney’s Domain on 13 October.

What’s On At The Sydney Opera House

The Sydney Opera House is putting the spotlight on storytime classics these Spring school holidays with charming, magical and much-loved tales leaping off the pages and onto its famous stages.

From 29 September – 6 October, the Helpmann Award-winning Bambert’s Book of Lost Stories will enchant children and parents alike with the story of an impossibly small man that loves to write. Reinhardt Jung’s internationally lauded novel is brought to life through delicate puppeteering as the lovable and tiny Bambert sets his stories free on miniature balloons. Will anyone return his call?

The perfect show for little ones with big imaginations, The Snow Dragon arrives in the Playhouse from 3 – 12 October in the form of a festive forest filled with fantastic creatures. This toe-tapping musical adventure that will have you humming for weeks after, follows Billy the goat on a New Year’s Eve adventure as he awaits the annual visit from the legendary Snow Dragon.

Retelling the story of the famous cow who jumped over the moon, Yo Diddle Diddle is a hilarious hip-hop infused adventure that explores resilience, determination and the power of friendship. Families can bust a mooo-ve with this guaranteed crowd pleaser in the Studio from 10 – 14 October.

Dumpling Delight at Sydney Tower Eye

Back due to popular demand, these school holidays the Sydney Tower Eye is your one-stop for food and views with a sky-high dumpling experience to celebrate Chinese Golden Week in partnership with the dumpling legends at New Shanghai.
From 1 – 7 October, the Observation Deck of the Sydney Tower Eye will transform into a Chinese kingdom, complete with festive decorations, inviting guests to celebrate the annual festivities with a-la-carte or unlimited lunch or dinner dumpling sessions available.

Barbie High Tea at The Langham, Melbourne

This is sure to be one of the highlights of the holidays. It’s a series of action-packed science workshops, with the them of World of Change.

Don’t miss the “It’s elemental” science show, learn something new in one of the workshops: “Chemistry Capers”, “States of Matter”, “Up Up and Away” and “Robotics”. Learn about the solar system in the new digital Starlab! Explore hands-on exhibits!

The Big Wedgie

The Big Wedgie inflatable waterslide is back and it now has a new home at West Beach Parks!

This is the world’s tallest and most extreme waterslide. Standing at a whopping 18.2 meters tall and 82 meters long, The Big Wedgie is for thrill seekers and adrenaline junkies.

There are also two smaller slides –  The Just Right Wedgie and The Little Wedgie – 2 smaller slides that are less crazy.

Sunken Secrets at the South Australian Maritime Museum

Are you ready to get down and dirty? The ocean holds many secrets hidden in the muddy sea bed. How do we find sunken relics, how do we know what they are, and what do they reveal about lost ships and past voyagers?

Sunken Secrets lets you get your hands on history- literally. Working with our archaeologists, you will handle real artefacts and learn how they help piece together the puzzles of our maritime past.

Equipped with your new skills, follow the museum trail and take the ‘Time Detectives Challenge’. Reward yourself with a climb up the lighthouse and imagine the Port River one hundred years ago. Will there be secrets there? You will soon find out!

Maleny Botanic Gardens & Bird World, Sunshine Coast Hinterland

Explore historic vessels of all shapes and sizes at the Maritime Museum. It is located on the banks of the Brisbane River at South Bank. Wave Lagoon, Darwin

One of Darwin’s coolest attractions is the Wave Lagoon: a palm-fringed swimming pool that turns into a tube-riding, boogie-boarding bucket of fun when the waves roll in every 20 minutes. The fully patrolled Wave Lagoon is two metres at its deepest point and slopes to a shallow area of still water, perfect for families. Bring your book: there are plenty of banana lounges, beach umbrellas and shady patches of lawn.

  • Some great ideas and some are easily affordable. You have to take into consideration how many children you have and their ages’
    Hopefully it’s good weather and you can get out and about……and you aren’t told “I’m bored”.

  • So many great options now that the weather is warmer. Get outside and go to parks, for walks, create imaginative play eg. treasure hunts, etc. The movies, shopping centre (free) activities… there’s so much to choose from.
