Choosing new flooring for your home is both exciting and daunting.

Whether you’re opting for carpet, timber, tiles or floating floors, flooring is a big investment. Floors have a huge impact on the visual appeal of your home – and there are the practical aspects to consider too.

So what are the important factors to take into account when deciding on new flooring for your home?

1.    Consider your lifestyle

You may love the look of cream carpet but if you have young children and pets it will take a lot of work to keep your carpet looking all peaches and cream! Choose a darker carpet colour or hard floor surface which will stand up to your family’s demands over time, especially in the high traffic areas. Carpet Court’s Pinnacle hybrid flooring product is a great option for pet owners as it has innovative ‘pet protect’ scratch, stain and odour resistant coatings.

Also consider the amount of time you have to keep your floors clean. Busy mums and dads should choose easy-care, hygienic surfaces such as luxury vinyl planks or sheets, multi-layer hybrids or durable laminates, where a quick swipe with a microfibre broom or damp mop will have your floors super clean.

2.    Assess your home environment

Carpet is considerably warmer than hard floors, so if you live in a cold climate area choose wool carpet or opt for wool rugs on your timber floors or tiles. It is also a soft and comfortable surface for homes with very young children. Carpet may not be the ideal choice for rural or beach homes where the outdoors has a habit of coming indoors, courtesy of your shoes.

If you live in a tropical climate with high humidity, hard flooring is cooler but choose products which have strong moisture resistance such as multi-layer hybrids or tiles. Carpet Court’s hybrid flooring range includes the high performing PRYZM collection which delivers a waterproof solution using innovative core technology and superior structural layers.

3.    Think about your home design

While there are some stunning woodgrain floating floor designs to choose from, pick a colour and plank size which complement your interior space. Remember, darker colours – while they may be striking – will draw the room inwards and lighter colours create a sense of space.

Floating floor collections often include wideboard and longboard options. This isn’t just for ease of installation – the different board sizes create different impressions in a room, so check them out too, at your local Carpet Court store.

4.    Budget considerations

Both carpet and floating floors have high-end luxury options and affordable choices to suit a range of budgets. With advancements in innovative technologies and manufacturing, there are beautiful synthetic carpets which offer excellent durability, comfort and style and are strong competitors to wool carpets.

The same applies to hard flooring solutions, with solid timber flooring considered the high-end product. If you love the look of timber but it is unaffordable, the variety of floating floor products means you can easily find a hardwearing alternative with a woodgrain finish which can be hard to distinguish from real timber.

When determining your budget, remember that while it is a big investment, your flooring has a long lifespan and will add significant value to your home. Choosing the right type of floor for your lifestyle, home design and environment in the long term is a cost-effective decision.

  • Flooring is so important to me and for my family over the years. I like carpet court, they have a great range to offer.

  • Our lino is great. A few marks here and there but it is easy to look after and not as cold underfoot as tiles.

  • I wish I had the money/knowledge of using floating floors or getting proper tiles. I have lino ones and they’ve shrunk and are coming up in places. I didn’t do them, but they haven’t been the best. I’m not too worried though as my youngest is 6 and there are more important things to be done. All in good time. Great suggestions, thank you!
