Hello!

A healthy baby! Practically every expecting parent biggest hope and wish is for the good health and wellbeing of the baby they are carrying.

I never really thought that you could be blessed with anything but a healthy baby – with the exception of stillbirth and of course genetic abnormalities. But I believed that those were something which was always picked up on during one of the ten thousand tests that pregnant mothers are given during their forty-week challenge.

Blessed with Children With Extraordinary Talents

Autism and brain damage are things I never thought were part of the equation. So you can imagine my surprise when I found out that I had been blessed with two children with these extraordinary talents.

Not as surprised however as some of our family, friends and even associates have been, to learn that my husband and I planned on continuing to grow our family, despite what they felt was added risks.

“What If It’s Disabled Too?”

Although we are medically well, socially we were very very sick. With many well-intentioned people’s reactions to our pregnancy news being ‘What if it’s disabled too?”

As though this thought had never crossed my mind in the subsequent pregnancies after my first two.

As if I didn’t already harbour this fear internally.

You know what though?

There are parents who give birth to the most perfect children, who then go on to suffer watching their flawless child develop terminal illnesses or struggle through a devastating accident which leaves their child in an imperfect state.

Facing a life of challenges, losing one’s abilities can happen to anyone at any age. At least with my boys, it happened early so they are learning, adapting and working their way through life to the best of their abilities.

I can’t imagine how truly devastating it would be to have a child that faced no challenges, to suddenly have some or all of their abilities stolen from them later on in life and have to teach them how to live all over again.

Take Your Blessings And Enjoy Them!

Whatever you are blessed with in life is exactly what you are meant to have so cherish and enjoy. Which of course works both ways – whatever our fellow man is blessed with, is meant perfectly for them.

It isn’t up to us to judge a situation and decide for someone else what they should or shouldn’t have, or if we feel their decision to add to their family is a risky one – especially if you aren’t actually there to help or assist in any way with their family. Or even pick up the phone to find out how they are.

Choose Kindness Over Judgement

In a world full of uncertainties and a life that is abundant with blessings in disguise, why not choose kindness over judgement? Happiness rather than intolerance? And above all, if you have nothing compassionate to say, why not just say nothing at all…

Someone’s situation may not seem perfect to you, but just remember that what may be a curse to one person could very well be the greatest blessing on Earth to another.

Your ability does not define you. Life has taught me that your outlook, determination and perseverance play a far greater role than a person’s ability ever will.

Choosing to become a parent of any child is most probably the biggest gamble you can ever take in life, because you never know what tomorrow may bring. But with a positive outlook, you are guaranteed that no matter what, things will always work out!

  • Not sure I would commit to more babies if there was a high chance of a disability. If it happened unexpectedly, well you just learn to live with it and cope

  • I think I would be reluctant to have more babies if there was an increased chance of them not being ???? per cent fit and healthy. Not just for me but for my already born children who need me, my partner and my unborn baby who could be damaged

  • I would be hesitant to have more babies if I knew there was genetic problem that I knew there would definitely be very poor quality of life. I know a Mum who has 2 children who have chronic Asthma. They have a full size Nebulizer at home but still sometimes have to rush the sick child to hospital by ambulance. They sought specialist Medical Advice and were told there was 95% chance that another baby would have asthma too. It had been passed down 2 generations and one of her cousins also had it.

  • All babies are perfect. I refused many tests because they wouldn’t change the outcome of my pregnancies

  • Very true, if you aren’t going to be there to help then keep your opinions and judgements to yourself. I can’t believe anyone thought it was appropriate to even ask that question to begin with.

  • This was so lovely to read and I think more people need to read this too as a reminder

  • My husband said years ago that he wishes people wouldn’t say “as long as it’s healthy”. What if the baby is not? That child is just as deserving of love and the parents are just as deserving of the joy that a newborn baby brings.

  • I have 2 healthy girls with no issues so far, aside from my first being premature and having a slight developmental delay with some things, for the most part she has caught up by 3. But I know if either had or have issues, I know Dad wont be able to handle it. He is impatient at the best of times, so those families that gothrough this, I commend you and well done, you deserve all the help and love you get.

  • A very interesting read. I agree that having kids is a huge gamble, but I think we love them no matter what life may throw at us, and I totally agree with having a positive outlook on things

  • I love my disabled son, but I find these sort of articles that all it a “blessing” a bit much.

  • People should definitely choose kindness over judgement. If you don’t have anything nice to say don’t say anything at all.
